A Standardized Patient (SP) is a community member trained to portray a patient case consistently during simulated clinical encounters. The SP independently and accurately portrays specified emotions, behaviors, and disease symptoms while interacting with health care students in simulations designed for experiential learning and/or assessment. The SP assesses student behaviors using standardized measurement tools and may participate in group training or mentor entry-level standardized patients. This is an on-call, non-benefits-eligible position with varied work hours based on program needs. Applicants must be able to maintain a trained character, recall case details and score student behaviors, communicate effectively, follow directions, incorporate trainer feedback, and protect confidential case and student information. Selected individuals provide demographic and medical history information for case matching and may be limited from particular cases when physical characteristics or medical conditions could affect consistent portrayals. Standardized Patients must be able to move all extremities without difficulty, step up and down from an exam table, quickly change from a gown to clothing, and reliably access email. They must be willing to complete a demographic and medical history questionnaire, participate in recorded simulations, wear a hospital gown with or without undergarments as needed, and participate in interviews and non-invasive physical examinations conducted by clinical students. Specific openings may require physical attributes or characteristics suited to the character being portrayed.
