About The Position

The Stage Director, Dance Production role at Gloucester County Institute of Technology involves collaborating with the stage manager and choreographers to establish the artistic vision, flow, and pacing of concerts. This position requires setting original choreography, staging guest artist choreography, and leading rehearsals. The director will provide artistic direction to dancers, block choreography, and coordinate with various design teams (lighting, sound, costumes, scenic). Responsibilities also include managing costume selection, fittings, and purchases, supporting budgeting for production expenses, and ensuring safe dance practices. The role involves maintaining rehearsal documentation, upholding choreography attribution standards, assisting with casting, overseeing performance consistency, and modeling professional industry expectations for students. Post-production evaluations and feedback for future improvements are also part of the role.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with stage manager and choreographers to establish the overall artistic vision, flow, and pacing of the concert
  • Set original concert choreography as needed, aligned with the theme, skill level of dancers, and performance goals
  • Rehearse, stage, and refine guest artist choreography, ensuring clarity, consistency, and artistic integrity while adapting for student performers
  • Schedule and lead rehearsals, including run-throughs, spacing rehearsals, and technical rehearsals
  • Provide artistic direction and constructive feedback to dancers regarding performance quality, musicality, dynamics, and stage presence
  • Block choreography for stage dimensions, sightlines, entrances/exits, and transitions between works
  • Coordinate with lighting, sound, costumes, and scenic designers to support choreographic intent
  • Communicate technical cues and staging needs to the stage manager and production team
  • Coordinate and purchase costume selection and design to ensure costumes support movement and safety
  • Coordinate costume fittings, quick changes, and costume maintenance during rehearsals and performances
  • Support budgeting by tracking costume, prop, and production expenses and making cost-effective decisions
  • Ensure safe dance practices, proper warm-ups, and injury prevention during rehearsals and performances
  • Maintain rehearsal documentation, including notes, spacing charts, and cue sheets
  • Uphold intellectual property and choreography attribution standards for original and guest artist works
  • Assist with casting decisions and role assignments in collaboration with choreographers and faculty
  • Oversee consistency of performances across multiple shows, including understudy or alternate casting
  • Support student learning by modeling professional rehearsal etiquette and industry expectations
  • Participate in post-production evaluations and provide feedback for future improvements
