Staff Structural Engineer

GTI Fabrication•Buffalo, NY

About The Position

GTI is a contract manufacturing partner serving customers in renewable energy, power generation, infrastructure, and industrial systems. It fabricates custom enclosures and skids and performs mechanical and electrical integration in-house. The role serves as a senior technical authority across multiple concurrent programs and product lines, including BESS, modular data centers, and GenSet platforms. It owns structural design methodology, standardization, and system-level performance while providing technical leadership, mentoring engineers, and improving consistency, quality, and manufacturability. The position partners with Engineering Leadership and the Technical Director on complex challenges and scalable engineering practices. The Staff Structural Engineer leads structural design approaches, standards, technical governance, quality reviews, and design-for-manufacturing initiatives. The role provides technical direction across programs, coordinates with mechanical, electrical, manufacturing, quality, and supply chain teams, supports product introduction, and interfaces with customers. It also directly supervises structural engineers, guides their development and workload, and stamps and seals structural drawings and calculations where PE licensure applies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • 10–15+ years of structural engineering experience, with significant exposure to structural steel design.
  • Demonstrated experience as a technical lead across multiple programs or product lines.
  • Deep expertise in structural analysis, connection design, and steel systems in accordance with AISC and ASCE standards.
  • Strong experience in design standardization, technical governance, and cross-functional engineering leadership.
  • Proven ability to solve complex, ambiguous engineering problems.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license; strongly preferred.
  • Experience in modular systems, prefabrication, or industrial manufacturing environments.
  • Experience supporting BESS, modular data centers, or power generation systems.
  • Familiarity with Design for Manufacturing (DFM) principles in fabrication-heavy environments.
  • Experience influencing engineering organizations in growth-stage or high-mix manufacturing environments.

Responsibilities

  • Define and own structural design approaches across multiple programs and product lines.
  • Establish standard methodologies for structural analysis, load cases, and modeling, ensuring consistency across BESS, modular data center, and GenSet platforms.
  • Lead design across concurrent engineering programs as a technical authority.
  • Develop, maintain, and improve structural design standards, connection libraries, calculation templates, weld details, bolted connections, and reusable structural systems.
  • Lead resolution of complex or ambiguous structural challenges and provide engineering judgments for non-standard conditions.
  • Direct advanced structural analysis and support root cause analysis for structural failures, implementing long-term corrective actions.
  • Drive designs that optimize fabrication, assembly, and system integration, reducing manufacturing variation through standardized, production-aligned practices.
  • Partner with Mechanical, Electrical, and Manufacturing Engineering to improve build efficiency, cost, and throughput, and advance design-for-manufacturing practices.
  • Influence engineering direction across teams and programs and coordinate structural interfaces with mechanical and electrical disciplines.
  • Partner with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, and Supply Chain to align structural decisions with business objectives.
  • Support new product introduction with scalable and repeatable structural solutions.
  • Enforce structural engineering standards and best practices; review and approve critical designs and calculations; perform code reviews for compliance.
  • Review and quality-check drawings and calculation packages before release for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with AISC, ASCE, IBC, and internal standards.
  • Lead initiatives to optimize structural designs for cost, weight, and material efficiency and improve performance, durability, and manufacturability.
  • Identify opportunities for innovation in materials, design approaches, and fabrication methods.
  • Directly supervise structural engineers, providing technical guidance, workload direction, and performance feedback.
  • Mentor the structural engineering team, shape skill-development roadmaps, and improve engineering processes.
  • Influence hiring, onboarding, and performance evaluation processes for the structural team.
  • Lead engineering kickoffs, design reviews, coordination meetings, and milestone gate reviews.
  • Interface with customers on structural scope, design intent, and technical constraints.
  • Work with the Technical Director on high-complexity structural challenges and engineering initiatives.
  • Stamp and seal structural drawings and calculations where PE licensure applies.
