Staff Software Engineer, Fullstack

PathAI•Boston, MA
•$146,250 - $224,250•Hybrid

About The Position

PathAI is hiring a Staff Software Engineer for its AISight digital pathology platform, which is used by pathologists and laboratories worldwide. This is a fullstack technical leadership role for an engineer with deep expertise in either frontend or backend development and working proficiency across the stack. The engineer will set technical direction, own architecture for major platform areas, and guide technical strategy in alignment with the product roadmap while balancing delivery with long-term scalability and maintainability. The role leads complex, cross-team initiatives from ambiguous problem definition through production, including technical design, risk identification, and tradeoff decisions. It remains hands-on, with production coding on critical and technically demanding system components. The engineer establishes standards for code quality, testing, observability, security, and performance, and improves engineering practices and tooling. The Staff Software Engineer collaborates with product, design, machine learning, infrastructure, QA, and regulatory teams to deliver reliable software that protects data integrity and patient data and meets regulated medical-device requirements, including design controls and validation. The role also mentors senior and mid-level engineers, supports hiring and onboarding, and represents engineering in discussions with customers, partners, and stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • At least 8 years of full lifecycle software development experience, including significant time in a senior or technical lead role.
  • Track record of architecting and shipping large-scale production systems and leading technical initiatives across team boundaries.
  • Deep expertise in either backend or frontend development and working proficiency in the other.
  • Backend expertise includes designing and building Python applications and APIs using Django or FastAPI, data modeling, relational databases such as PostgreSQL, and distributed or event-driven systems.
  • Frontend expertise includes building complex, performant web applications with modern JavaScript frameworks such as Vue or React, including state management, frontend architecture, and UX quality.
  • Strong foundation in data structures, algorithms, and system design.
  • Hands-on experience building and operating systems on a cloud platform; AWS is preferred.
  • Ability to influence technical decisions through clear writing, sound judgment, and collaboration rather than authority.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work effectively with a distributed team and non-technical stakeholders.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience building software in a regulated environment, such as FDA, IEC 62304, ISO 13485, HIPAA, or CE-IVDR, or experience in healthtech.
  • Experience with medical imaging, digital pathology, or large-image and data visualization, such as whole-slide image viewers, WebGL, or canvas rendering.
  • Hands-on experience with CI/CD tooling, such as GitLab CI.
  • Experience with Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Experience with an infrastructure-as-code framework, such as Terraform or CDK.
  • Experience integrating machine-learning models or AI-powered features into production applications.

Responsibilities

  • Set technical direction for the AISight platform and drive technical strategy in line with the product roadmap.
  • Own the architecture of major platform areas, balancing near-term delivery with long-term scalability and maintainability.
  • Lead complex, multi-team initiatives from problem definition through production.
  • Write and review technical designs, identify risks early, and make tradeoffs explicit.
  • Write production code on the system's most critical and technically demanding components.
  • Set and uphold engineering standards for code quality, testing, observability, security, and performance.
  • Improve development practices and tooling.
  • Collaborate with product, design, machine learning, infrastructure, QA, and regulatory teams to ensure reliable software that protects data integrity and patient data and meets medical-device requirements, including design controls and validation.
  • Mentor senior and mid-level engineers, grow technical leadership, and help shape hiring and onboarding.
  • Represent engineering in discussions with customers, partners, and stakeholders, explaining technical concepts to non-experts.
