About The Position

PathAI is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to provide technical leadership for AISight, its digital pathology platform used by pathologists and laboratories worldwide. This fullstack role calls for deep expertise in either frontend or backend engineering, along with the ability to work comfortably across the stack. The engineer will set technical direction, own the architecture of major platform areas, and guide technical strategy in line with the product roadmap while balancing delivery with long-term scalability and maintainability. The role leads complex, multi-team initiatives from ambiguous problem definition through production, including writing and reviewing technical designs, identifying risks, and making tradeoffs explicit. It remains hands-on, with production coding on critical and technically demanding areas. The engineer sets and upholds standards for code quality, testing, observability, security, and performance, and improves development practices and tooling. The engineer collaborates with product, design, machine learning, infrastructure, QA, and regulatory teams to deliver reliable software that protects data integrity and patient data and meets regulated medical-device requirements, including design controls and validation. The role also mentors senior and mid-level engineers, helps develop technical leadership, contributes to hiring and onboarding, and represents engineering in discussions with customers, partners, and stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • At least 8 years of full lifecycle software development experience, including significant experience in a senior or technical lead role.
  • Track record of architecting and shipping large-scale production systems and leading technical initiatives across team boundaries.
  • Deep expertise in either backend or frontend engineering and working proficiency in the other area.
  • Backend expertise, if applicable: designing and building Python applications and APIs using Django or FastAPI, data modeling, PostgreSQL or other relational databases, and distributed or event-driven systems.
  • Frontend expertise, if applicable: building complex, performant web applications with modern JavaScript frameworks such as Vue, React, or equivalent, including state management, frontend architecture, and UX quality.
  • Strong foundation in data structures, algorithms, and system design.
  • Hands-on experience building and operating systems on a cloud platform; AWS is preferred.
  • Ability to influence technical decisions through clear writing, sound judgment, and collaboration rather than authority.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work effectively with a distributed team and non-technical stakeholders.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience building software in a regulated environment (e.g., FDA, IEC 62304, ISO 13485, HIPAA, or CE-IVDR) or in healthtech.
  • Experience with medical imaging, digital pathology, or large-image and data visualization, such as whole-slide image viewers, WebGL, or canvas rendering.
  • Hands-on experience with CI/CD tooling, such as GitLab CI.
  • Experience with Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Experience with an infrastructure-as-code framework, such as Terraform or CDK.
  • Experience integrating machine-learning models or AI-powered features into production applications.

Responsibilities

  • Set technical direction for the AISight digital pathology platform and drive technical strategy in line with the product roadmap.
  • Own the architecture of major platform areas, balancing near-term delivery with long-term scalability and maintainability.
  • Lead complex, multi-team initiatives from ambiguous problem definition through production delivery.
  • Write and review technical designs, identify risks early, and make tradeoffs explicit.
  • Write production code for the system’s most critical and technically demanding areas.
  • Set and uphold engineering standards for code quality, testing, observability, security, and performance.
  • Drive improvements to development practices and tooling.
  • Collaborate with product, design, machine learning, infrastructure, QA, and regulatory teams to deliver reliable software that protects data integrity and patient data and meets regulated medical-device requirements, including design controls and validation.
  • Mentor senior and mid-level engineers, grow technical leadership on the team, and help shape hiring and onboarding.
  • Represent engineering in conversations with customers, partners, and stakeholders, explaining complex technical concepts to non-experts.
