About The Position

Anthropic is hiring a Staff+ Software Engineer for its Infrastructure organization. The role focuses on building the systems that carry software changes—including code, runtime configuration, feature flags, and infrastructure changes—from development to production. The team aims to provide every Anthropic team with a fast, safe, and predictable deployment path. The engineer will own significant parts of the deployment platform end to end, from design through production operations. The platform includes pipelines, staged rollouts, health-gated promotion and rollback, runtime configuration, feature flags, and systems that distribute code and artifacts across a large fleet. The role also involves partnering with teams across Anthropic and Security to expand platform capabilities and make production delivery secure by default. Anthropic is a public benefit corporation headquartered in San Francisco. The company expects staff to work from one of its offices at least 25% of the time under its current location-based hybrid policy, though some roles may require more office time.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in at least one backend or systems programming language, such as Rust, Go, C++, or Java.
  • Experience leading the design, building, and operation of distributed systems or infrastructure in production, including providing technical direction across teams.
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure and containerized workloads, such as Kubernetes on AWS or GCP.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • A bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.
  • A field of study relevant to the role, demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience building deployment, release, or change management systems at large scale.
  • Experience with production on-call and incident response.
  • Experience with Rust in production.
  • Experience with progressive delivery and GitOps tooling, such as Argo CD or Argo Rollouts.
  • Deep knowledge of Kubernetes, including controllers and operators.
  • Experience with Terraform or other infrastructure-as-code systems at scale, including state management and locking.
  • Experience building feature flag, experimentation, or dynamic configuration systems.
  • Experience with artifact or package distribution, such as OCI registries, Nix, or content-addressed storage.
  • Experience with software supply chain security, such as signed build provenance.
  • Experience building high-throughput workflow engines or control planes backed by relational databases.
  • Experience building internal developer platforms and leading adoption across many teams.
  • Experience using AI agents in engineering work or building systems that agents operate.

Responsibilities

  • Set technical direction for major parts of the deployment platform and own them end to end, including design, implementation, and operations.
  • Build rollout safety features, including progressive delivery, health-gated promotion, automatic pause and rollback, and self-managed deployment controls.
  • Design APIs and abstractions that work for both engineers and AI agents.
  • Extend the platform to new workload types and runtimes, including Kubernetes, serverless, and edge platforms.
  • Build and operate runtime configuration and feature flag systems with validation, gradual rollout, and fast rollback.
  • Build infrastructure-as-code workflows that teams can use for safe, routine changes.
  • Scale artifact distribution so code and configuration reach machines quickly and efficiently.
  • Partner with Security to make production delivery secure by default, including verifiable builds, least-privilege access, and auditable changes.
  • Work with teams across Anthropic to understand deployment needs and bring their workloads onto the platform.
  • Participate in on-call and incident response, and use lessons learned to create guardrails that prevent recurring problems.

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation and benefits.
  • Optional equity donation matching.
  • Generous vacation and parental leave.
  • Flexible working hours.
  • Office space for collaboration.
