About The Position

As a Staff Engineer at Capital One, you will be part of a community of technical experts helping define the future of banking in the cloud. You will work alongside developers, machine learning experts, product managers, and people leaders. Staff Engineers lead in their domains by devising practical, reusable solutions to complex problems and driving innovation that improves business outcomes while delivering strong technology solutions. They promote engineering excellence, collaboration, and an inclusive environment, mentor engineers, and help recruit and develop technical talent. The role leads through technical contribution and serves as a trusted advisor on key technologies, platforms, and capability domains, sharing knowledge through communications, code samples, blog posts, and other materials. While specializing in a subject area, the role is expected to influence the wider organization.

The Card Core Accounts and Transactions team is part of Card Technology and manages highly available, scalable services that are critical to customer-facing applications. The team is transforming its platform by migrating legacy systems to a modern technology stack. In this role, you will architect the target-state application architecture and provide technical support to development teams. You will help build and improve platforms with a continuous focus on security, performance, maintainability, and usability.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science or a related quantitative field, such as Statistics, Economics, Operations Research, Analytics, Mathematics, or Engineering.
• At least 9 years of experience in software engineering and solution architecture.
• At least 9 years of experience in enterprise architecture and design patterns.
• At least 9 years of experience in cloud computing, such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud.
• At least 9 years of experience in data architecture.

Nice To Haves

• Master's degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering.
• 12+ years of experience in software engineering and solution architecture.
• 12+ years of experience in enterprise architecture and design patterns.
• Experience with web technologies, including JavaScript, TypeScript, and SPA frameworks.

• 12+ years of experience across the full system development lifecycle, from conception through architecture, implementation, testing, deployment, and production support.
• 10+ years of experience with cloud-based productivity tools or virtualization technologies.
• 12+ years of experience with networking protocols and integration with third-party distributed systems.
• 7+ years of experience mentoring senior engineers and driving professional development within technical teams.
• 3+ years of experience leading cross-domain architectural reviews or establishing coding and design standards.
• Expertise in strategically applying agentic AI coding tools to solve systemic development challenges.
