About The Position

Affirm’s Card Experiences team builds the product surfaces that make the Affirm Card simple and trustworthy, owning the cardholder journey from ordering a card through using it. The team works across customer-facing web and mobile experiences and the backend services behind them. The role partners closely with product, design, risk, and operations to turn customer pain points into improvements, measure impact with data, and own features end to end—from shaping the problem through launch and production monitoring. It also helps improve reliability and on-call health. AI is central to the team’s approach to building efficiently and creating better customer experiences, with security and quality held to a high standard. The Staff Software Engineer will set the team’s technical strategy on a year-long horizon, connect that strategy to critical business-impacting projects, and help establish technical solutions and operational processes. The role fosters quality and ownership through code review and design standards, supports the team’s operations and availability, and develops talent through feedback, guidance, and example.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale using languages such as Python or Kotlin.
  • At least 8 years of experience as a software engineer.
  • Extensive track record developing highly available distributed systems using technologies such as AWS, MySQL, Spark, and Kubernetes.
  • Proficiency developing web applications using declarative UI frameworks such as React Native, React, or Vue.
  • Proficiency designing, developing, and launching systems at scale.
  • Experience delivering major features or system components, or deprecating existing functionality, through a defined technical and execution plan.
  • Ability to write high-quality code that is readily understood and used by others.
  • Ability to thrive amid ambiguity and work from low-level language idioms through large-system architecture.
  • AI-first mindset, adoption of current technologies, and ability to identify trends and apply them safely.
  • Demonstrated ability to gather and iteratively incorporate feedback from engineering and cross-functional peers.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for collaboration with a global engineering team.
  • Equivalent practical experience or a bachelor’s degree in a related field.

Responsibilities

  • Set technical strategy for the team on a year-long time scale and connect it to critical, business-impacting projects.
  • Collaborate with product management, design, analytics, and other teams throughout the product development lifecycle to manage technical sustainability, risks, and trade-offs.
  • Define and advocate for technical solutions and operational processes that increase the team’s effectiveness.
  • Own team operations and availability by ensuring monitoring, triage rotations, playbooks, policies, testing, and alerting are in place for maintenance and on-call work.
  • Establish code review and design standards, and advocate for them beyond the team through writing and tech talks.
  • Develop team talent through feedback, guidance, and leading by example.
  • Own features end to end, from shaping problems through launch and production monitoring.
  • Use data to measure the impact of shipped improvements and help raise reliability and on-call health.

  • 100% subsidized medical coverage for employees and dependents.
  • Dental and vision coverage for employees and dependents.
