About The Position

As a Staff Software Engineer on Wayve’s Model Development Platform, you will own the architecture of cloud services supporting the AI model lifecycle, including data and training workflows, experiment scheduling, evaluation, and on-road testing. You will build secure, reliable, scalable foundations—including identity and access, microservices, micro-frontends, deployment, and rollback—that enable researchers and engineers to iterate quickly and ship autonomous driving models safely.

Working with the Head of Model Dev Platform and other technical leads, you will shape technical direction and align platform engineering with company goals. The role is hands-on across backend services, web applications, and cloud infrastructure, while also providing technical leadership through design reviews, mentorship, and reusable engineering patterns. You will collaborate with Product, Research, Design, Operations, and adjacent platform disciplines, and take significant services and multi-quarter initiatives from problem definition through production operation.

Requirements

• At least 7 years designing and building large-scale distributed systems, cloud platforms, or developer platforms, including experience at senior or staff level.
• Proven ability to design and operate scalable microservice architectures on a major cloud provider.
• Strong grounding in API design, data modeling, asynchronous workflows, and distributed-systems fundamentals.
• Hands-on experience implementing authentication and authorization, such as OAuth2/OIDC and RBAC, using sound security practices.
• Experience driving reliability improvements, defining SLAs/SLOs, and building observable, self-healing, highly available systems.
• Experience with CI/CD, containerization and orchestration such as Kubernetes, infrastructure as code, and safe release and rollback strategies.
• Ability to write and review production-quality code in languages such as Python or TypeScript.
• Good understanding of modern web architectures, including React and micro-frontends.
• Track record of taking significant services from design through deployment and production operation.
• Excellent communication and cross-functional skills, with experience mentoring engineers and fostering engineering excellence.

Nice To Haves

• Experience building internal developer platforms, workflow systems, or tools for ML researchers and engineers.
• Familiarity with ML operations, including training, evaluation, experiment tracking, and artifact management.
• Experience with data pipelines, distributed job orchestration, event-driven architectures, or large-scale compute tools such as Spark, Ray, Airflow, or MLflow.
• Experience with service mesh, API gateways, feature-flagging, or progressive-delivery tooling.
• Knowledge of privacy, compliance, and secure handling of sensitive or large-scale data.
• Experience in autonomous systems, robotics, simulation, or another safety-critical domain.

Responsibilities

• Design and evolve major cloud platform services for reliability, observability, security, and scalability; help set and meet availability, latency, and performance targets such as SLAs and SLOs.
• Own identity, access control, and auditability across platform services and applications, enabling secure and consistent access to sensitive models and fleet data.
• Define patterns, boundaries, and shared tooling for backend microservices and micro-frontends so teams can build and release independently while systems interoperate.
• Build robust CI/CD, progressive delivery, deployment, and rollback infrastructure, including observability, alerting, and self-healing capabilities.
• Take significant services and multi-quarter initiatives from problem definition and design through production operation, balancing speed, scalability, security, and operational simplicity.
• Shape technical direction for the area and align platform engineering with company goals in collaboration with the Head of Model Dev Platform and technical leads.
• Lead cross-team design reviews and establish reusable patterns, connecting the platform with experiment scheduling, data pipelines, distributed compute, and adjacent disciplines.
• Stay hands-on in backend services, web applications, and cloud infrastructure, and solve difficult technical problems pragmatically.
• Mentor engineers through design discussions, code reviews, and pairing, and raise the bar for engineering quality.
• Partner with Product, Research, Design, and Operations to align technical solutions with user needs and contribute to the platform’s long-term roadmap.
