Staff Reliability Engineer - Power Electronics

Lunar Energy•Mountain View, CA

About The Position

Lunar Energy is seeking a Staff Reliability Engineer to ensure the reliability of its home energy products throughout their lifecycle, from design through field performance. The role focuses on power electronics and battery systems and works closely with mechanical and electrical engineers, as well as finance, to set reliability targets, assess risks, develop tests, investigate failures, and improve products. The position supports Lunar Energy’s mission to advance clean energy and build reliable products that help electrify homes and connect communities.

Requirements

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or equivalent.
  • Proven track record of solving complex power electronics reliability failures.
  • Working knowledge of the theory of operation of common power converter topologies, such as inverters and buck-boost converters.
  • Strong understanding of PCBA-level failure physics, including CTE mismatch, solder fatigue, contact resistance, and insulation degradation.
  • Familiarity with failure modes in common power electronics components, including electrolytic capacitors, relays, semiconductors, and magnetics.
  • Working knowledge of failure analysis techniques such as optical microscopy, SEM, CSAM, X-ray, cross-sectioning, and EDX, including selecting an appropriate technique for a specific failure.
  • Experience with accelerated life testing models and governing equations, particularly for PCBAs, battery storage, and relevant mechanical structures.
  • Understanding of reliability statistics.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with mechanical and electrical engineers during hardware design to establish and refine component- and system-level reliability targets for power electronics and battery systems.
  • Provide Design for Reliability (DfR) input during new product development.
  • Lead Design Failure Modes and Effects Analyses (DFMEA) to capture performance risks and implement mitigation activities.
  • Develop accelerated life test (ALT) reliability plans for components and subsystems, using identified risks, reliability targets, and physics-of-failure methodology to demonstrate required reliability throughout the product design life.
  • Track field reliability metrics, including part replacements, customer complaints, and fault codes.
  • Identify opportunities for continuous product improvement and reliability growth.
  • Collaborate with the finance team to provide insights into the warranty program.
  • Lead failure analysis of reliability tests and/or field returns to determine root causes and drive product improvements through containment and corrective actions.

Benefits

  • Equity in a fast-growing company through the employee stock program.
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees and dependents.
  • Flexible paid time off and 10 paid holidays.
  • Tax-deferred 401(k) plan.
  • Paid parental leave for full-time employees, including 12 weeks for the birthing mother and 6 weeks for the non-birthing parent.
  • Subsidized EV charging and pre-tax commuter benefits.
