About The Position

Reliability Engineers at Lunar Energy ensure product reliability throughout the lifecycle of the company's home energy products. The role contributes during design, develops test plans, and assesses ongoing field performance. The Staff Reliability Engineer focuses on power electronics and battery systems, working with a diverse team to support reliable clean-energy products.

Requirements

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or equivalent.
  • Proven track record of solving complex power electronics reliability failures.
  • Working knowledge of the theory of operation of common power converter topologies, such as inverters and buck-boost converters.
  • Strong grasp of PCBA-level failure physics, including CTE mismatch, solder fatigue, contact resistance, and insulation degradation.
  • Familiarity with failure modes in common power electronics components, including electrolytic capacitors, relays, semiconductors, and magnetics.
  • Working knowledge of failure analysis techniques such as optical microscopy, SEM, CSAM, X-ray, cross-sectioning, and EDX, including selecting an appropriate technique for a specific failure.
  • Experience with accelerated life testing models and governing equations, specifically for PCBAs, battery storage, and relevant mechanical structures.
  • Understanding of reliability statistics.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with mechanical and electrical engineers during hardware design to establish and refine component- and system-level reliability targets for power electronics and battery systems.
  • Provide Design for Reliability (DfR) input during new product development.
  • Drive Design Failure Modes and Effects Analyses (DFMEA) to capture performance risks and implement mitigation activities.
  • Develop accelerated life test (ALT) reliability plans for components and subsystems using identified risks, reliability targets, and physics-of-failure methodology.
  • Track field reliability performance, including part replacements, customer complaints, and fault codes; identify opportunities for product improvement and reliability growth.
  • Collaborate with the finance team to provide insights into the warranty program.
  • Drive failure analysis of reliability tests and field returns to determine root causes and drive product improvement through containment and corrective actions.

Benefits

  • Equity in a fast-growing company and participation in the employee stock program.
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees and dependents.
  • Flexible paid time off and 10 paid holidays.
  • Tax-deferred 401(k) plan.
