Staff Product Manager, Metering and Attribution

Datadog•New York, NY
•$244,000 - $305,000

About The Position

Datadog’s Revenue Engineering organization builds the platform that measures customer usage and turns it into actionable usage and cost data. As Staff Product Manager for Metering and Cost Attribution, you will own product direction for the platform that measures, attributes, and presents usage across Datadog. The role begins with tagging, the customer-facing foundation for cost allocation, chargeback, quotas, and governance, and expands to metering capabilities that support new pricing and packaging models, as well as platform speed and scale as Datadog’s portfolio grows. Over time, you will own the vision and roadmap for a usage platform used by every Datadog team and relied on by every customer. You will own the path from usage events to billable output, including consumption models, cost attribution, and usage analytics for customers and their finance teams. You will partner closely with the billing platform team. The platform supports a broad range of billable metrics, regions, parent and child organizations, reseller hierarchies, and interfaces including in-app experiences, APIs, and agentic workflows. The role requires product decisions about granularity, timeliness, and flexibility, and consistency across teams building on the platform. This is a highly visible individual-contributor position spanning multiple engineering teams, every product vertical that emits billable telemetry, and partners in Sales, Support, and Finance. You will define a multi-quarter product direction; own the tagging model; develop metering and rating capabilities; establish quality standards for usage data; build agentic capabilities and data contracts; and anticipate market developments in cost allocation and governance. You will also align stakeholders, mentor product managers, and engage customers through preview programs, design partnerships, and industry forums.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of Product Management experience, or a track record demonstrating Staff-level capabilities in related software roles.
  • Significant ownership of complex technical products.
  • Comfort operating with ambiguity and breadth in platform work whose scope evolves over multiple quarters.
  • Ability to follow cause and effect from telemetry intake through metering, aggregation, attribution, and billing; reason about unit economics and cost-to-serve alongside customer experience; and maintain the product throughline as scope evolves.
  • Fluency in data models and pipelines, including event pipelines, usage aggregation, cardinality, deduplication, backfills, and processing latency.
  • Ability to synthesize input across engineering teams, Support, Sales, Finance, and product verticals into a defensible product position.
  • A rigorous approach to accuracy in usage and cost data, including balancing investment in quality with new capabilities.
  • Strong collaboration and influence skills, including building trust with engineers, product peers, designers, and commercial partners; influencing senior stakeholders without direct authority; and adapting to new evidence.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with high-cardinality telemetry and the cost and pricing tradeoffs it creates.
  • Experience with usage-based or consumption-based monetization, including metering, rating, and cost allocation.
  • Familiarity with usage-based billing infrastructure such as Metronome, Orb, m3ter, Amberflo, Zuora, or Stripe Billing, or with FinOps tools such as CloudZero, Vantage, or Finout.
  • Experience owning a platform capability consumed by many internal product teams, including adoption and onboarding.
  • Experience with pricing and packaging, and comfort reasoning about margin and cost-to-serve alongside packaging changes.
  • Exposure to the FinOps Foundation framework or FOCUS specification, and to chargeback, showback, and tag governance at enterprise scale.

Responsibilities

  • Set product direction for metering and attribution, define desired outcomes from usage events through billable output, maintain a multi-quarter platform vision, and sequence work with engineering teams into phases that deliver customer value.
  • Own the customer-facing tagging model, enabling consistent tag definitions across products, translating tags into granular usage and cost breakdowns, and designing how customers can adjust and reconstruct attribution when tags change.
  • Define metering and rating capabilities that support pricing and packaging, including usage aggregation, unit definitions, commitments, included usage, and overage.
  • Serve as the subject matter expert for metering and cost attribution across Datadog; set standards for product verticals introducing new SKUs, align Engineering, Cloud Cost Management, Support, Sales, and Finance on a cost allocation model, and mentor product managers.
  • Set the quality standard for usage data by translating customer needs for accuracy, timeliness, and auditability into product requirements and service objectives; maintain consistency among measured usage, attribution, and billing; and provide sizing and impact analysis.
  • Build agentic capabilities on usage data to identify unexpected consumption changes, explain the teams and services driving them, recommend next steps, and own the data contracts and interfaces that enable agents to reason about usage.
  • Anticipate changes in cost allocation and cost governance by tracking FinOps practices, cloud-provider primitives, and specialist vendors; shape Datadog’s investments; and engage customers through preview programs, design partnerships, and industry forums.
