About The Position

Abbott is hiring a Staff Mobile Engineer, iOS for Lingo, its biosensing technology that tracks biomarkers such as glucose, ketones, and lactate. The role is onsite in Alameda, California. The engineer will lead the design and development of Lingo’s iOS applications and shared platform components, set architectural direction, raise engineering standards, and own large initiatives from concept through production. The position calls for deep, hands-on iOS expertise and modern Swift architecture experience, combined with technical leadership and the ability to address both performance-critical features and broader product and engineering needs. The engineer will work with product managers, architects, Platform Engineering, and other stakeholders to shape technical designs, lead discovery, and guide Lingo’s long-term iOS strategy. A major focus is leading the consumer app’s transition from React Native to fully native iOS while maintaining feature parity and stability. The role includes developing sophisticated features and platform components; improving performance, reliability, and scalability; establishing architecture and modularization standards; managing CI/CD, builds, releases, configurations, and observability; troubleshooting production issues; and integrating AI/ML capabilities with attention to privacy, security, and performance. The position also involves collaboration with a globally distributed engineering team across the US, Spain, and India. Travel is listed as 10% of the time.

  • Experience integrating on-device or cloud-powered AI/ML capabilities into iOS applications, such as Core ML or equivalent.
  • Experience with GraphQL.
  • Familiarity with Bluetooth Low Energy protocols and mobile SDK integration for wearable or connected health devices.
  • Experience building and maintaining shared iOS platform components, SDKs, or libraries used by other engineering teams.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and participate in designing and developing complex iOS applications and shared platform components, including SDKs, libraries, and tooling.
  • Design and implement iOS application features and optimize app performance, reliability, and scalability.
  • Define and drive iOS architecture standards using Swift, SwiftUI, Combine/async-await, MVVM/MVI, and modularization.
  • Own large initiatives from concept through production and establish long-term iOS technical strategy, including modularization, CI/CD, build optimization, and observability.
  • Manage code and configurations across environments and participate in release management and environment controls with Platform Engineering.
  • Lead discovery and high-level design for medium to large projects; collaborate with stakeholders to gather requirements and define technical specifications.
  • Troubleshoot business and production issues and promote crash analytics and performance monitoring.
  • Integrate on-device and cloud-powered AI/ML capabilities while following privacy, security, and performance best practices.
  • Lead the migration of the consumer mobile app from React Native to native iOS, including migration sequencing, architecture decisions, bridging, feature parity, and app stability.
  • Assess React Native components and screens for migration complexity, define replacement patterns, and establish technical standards for the iOS team.
  • Partner with backend teams to design efficient mobile APIs and offline-first solutions.
