Staff iOS Engineer

RADAR•San Diego, CA
•$172,000 - $250,000

About The Position

RADAR is seeking a Staff iOS Engineer to shape its mobile and cross-platform technical strategy and influence engineering direction beyond the iOS team. The company is redesigning and rebuilding its mobile apps, and this senior individual contributor will provide technical leadership without formal management duties. The role calls for significant autonomy, hands-on engineering, and close partnership with product, design, Android, platform, and backend leaders. The engineer will define long-term mobile architecture, contribute to cross-platform strategy—including Kotlin Multiplatform adoption—and guide major initiatives from concept through measurable outcomes. They will design and build high-leverage parts of the iOS codebase using Swift and SwiftUI; set and promote standards for architecture, quality, performance, and reliability; mentor Staff and Senior engineers; and help establish the technical foundation for the next-generation mobile product. The role also includes planning the migration of existing customers from legacy apps to the new app while minimizing disruption, and continuing to support and improve legacy products. During the first 90 days, the engineer is expected to onboard and ship an initial production change, contribute to the rebuilt app, lead architecture and design reviews, make measurable progress on the rebuild, help adopt engineering standards across teams, and become a technical authority whose input shapes product and engineering decisions.

Requirements

  • Extensive experience building and shipping iOS applications, including setting technical direction for large-scale, widely used apps.
  • Deep expertise in Swift, SwiftUI, UIKit, and Apple platform internals, including concurrency, performance, and memory management.
  • Experience setting technical strategy across multiple teams or an organization, with clear influence on product and business outcomes.
  • Experience leading major, multi-quarter initiatives across functions and delivering measurable results.
  • Ability to define priorities and problem space with little direction and work with a high degree of autonomy.
  • Skill influencing without authority and aligning senior engineers and leaders on complex technical decisions.
  • Excellent communication skills, including explaining complex tradeoffs to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Proven ability to mentor senior engineers and raise the effectiveness of the people around you.
  • Comfort with ambiguity and high ownership in a fast-moving startup.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as a Staff+ engineer, or in an equivalent technical leadership role, at a company through a period of significant scale.
  • Experience leading a major app rewrite or re-platforming and successfully migrating existing users.
  • Hands-on experience with Kotlin Multiplatform or other cross-platform code-sharing approaches on iOS.
  • Experience with modular app architecture and build-system optimization.
  • Experience shipping features using newer Apple capabilities such as widgets and Live Activities.
  • Passion for design detail, accessibility, and delightful user experiences.
  • Experience developing and shipping a configurable UI.
  • Experience building iOS apps with gRPC and Protocol Buffers, including API contract design, streaming, and network performance tuning.

Responsibilities

  • Define the multi-year mobile architecture and technical strategy.
  • Co-lead cross-platform strategy, including shared code and Kotlin Multiplatform adoption, in partnership with Android and backend leaders.
  • Identify technical bets and platform capabilities that create new product opportunities.
  • Guide major cross-functional initiatives across mobile, platform, and backend teams from concept to measurable outcome.
  • Design and build the most complex and highest-leverage parts of the iOS codebase in Swift and SwiftUI.
  • Set engineering standards for architecture, quality, performance, and reliability, and drive their adoption across teams.
  • Mentor Staff and Senior engineers and help develop future technical leaders.
  • Drive the technical vision and architecture for the rebuild of Radar’s mobile apps.
  • Plan and drive migration of existing customers from legacy apps to the new app while minimizing disruption.
  • Support and improve legacy products while balancing stability and customer needs against investment in the new platform.
  • Complete onboarding and security compliance training, meet stakeholders, and ship an initial production change.
  • Lead architecture and design reviews and contribute features to both the rebuilt and legacy apps.
