We are currently seeking a Staff Geologist 2 to work in a technical support role with highly skilled professionals on diverse project teams in a dynamic environment. This is an excellent opportunity to join a growing group and company and get involved in a variety of projects for a diverse range of clients. This is a full-time position located in our San Diego, CA office. In this role, you will support investigation and remediation activities at legacy contaminated sites undergoing active assessment, cleanup, or long‑term monitoring. The position centers on independently executing field programs with a strong emphasis on quality data collection, environmental compliance, and safe work practices. You will conduct soil, soil vapor, and groundwater sampling; oversee or perform well installations; and support drilling operations using methods such as direct‑push, hollow‑stem auger, sonic, and mud‑rotary. Field responsibilities also include implementing soil management plans, performing dust and air‑monitoring activities during intrusive work, and documenting field conditions in accordance with project and regulatory requirements. This role requires independent implementation of field work and data collection, ensuring accurate recording of sampling results, site observations, and field decisions, as well as preparation of summaries for inclusion in technical reports. You will collaborate closely with project managers, senior technical staff, and multidisciplinary teams to ensure that work is performed safely and efficiently. Your work will follow all applicable health and safety protocols, including OSHA HAZWOPER protocols. Additional responsibilities include participating in health and safety and daily tailgate meetings, communicating progress and field conditions/challenges to the project team, coordinating with subcontractors onsite, and maintaining compliance with client and regulatory requirements throughout all phases of work.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geology.
  • Proficient technical writing, verbal communication, reasoning, and time management skills.
  • Able to work independently or with minimal direction in performing tasks and assignments under the direction of senior staff.
  • Desire to learn and grow in your profession, demonstrate a positive attitude, strong work ethic, resourcefulness, flexibility, and ownership.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Civil 3D, GIS, or equivalent data systems (familiarity sufficient for routine field and reporting tasks; proficiency not required).
  • Familiar with environmental analytical testing and data reduction techniques for soil, water, and air.
  • Able to meet the physical requirements of the position: lift 50 lbs., traverse unstable/sloping sites and landscapes, work outside in a range of weather conditions, and have the stamina for moderate physical activity for the majority of field working hours.
  • Able to travel to work locations that may require overnight stays.
  • OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER certification is required.
  • 2 to 3 years of related environmental consulting experience - this includes:
  • - Drilling and multi-media sampling experience
  • - Working on soil and/or groundwater remediation sites, including hands-on field activities in site cleanup - - Phase I/II site assessment experience

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Geology.
  • Experience with energy/aerospace/manufacturing/brownfield sites.
  • CA Environmental regulatory knowledge familiarity.
  • Specialized software applications (e.g., groundwater modeling software).

Responsibilities

  • Independently conduct field investigations and assessments of soil, groundwater, surface water, etc., using approved industry standard procedures.
  • Conduct basic construction observation, including quality control documentation and field-testing tasks.
  • May support the conduct or oversight of remedial system O&M and field pilot study demonstrations.
  • Use results of field investigations, including subsurface explorations, monitoring well construction, field sampling, and other work to support site characterization.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate and detailed documentation of activities both in the field and during data evaluation.
  • Apply academic training and use computer software to perform calculations and evaluation of information.
  • Perform project environmental data reduction and summarization.
  • Support field data organization, reduction, and synthesis.
  • Draft technical sections of project communications and reports.
  • Assist with the development of technical scopes of work and cost estimating for proposal efforts on small- to medium-sized tasks or project opportunities.
  • Perform all work in accordance with company and client health and safety protocols.
  • Demonstrate the company’s foundational safety behaviors.
  • Execute site characterization and investigation programs at petroleum legacy hazardous waste sites and industrial facilities.
  • Ensure strict adherence to OSHA and petroleum industry safety standards.
