About The Position

As a Staff Software Engineer in the Retail – Transaction domain, you will provide technical leadership across two engineering teams responsible for a critical customer journey. You will combine hands-on engineering with Staff-level influence to shape checkout capabilities across web, backend, and future native mobile experiences, while creating technical alignment with connected areas such as payments, orders, and shipping. You will help set architectural direction, raise engineering standards, and develop scalable solutions used by customers across Europe. The position is remote within Germany, with occasional on-site collaboration at the Berlin or Cologne offices depending on business and team requirements. The technology stack includes React.js, Next.js, Java, Spring Boot, SwiftUI, Swift, Kotlin, Android SDK, ES6, ESI, Varnish, Docker, Google Cloud, and Kubernetes.

Requirements

  • Deep, hands-on frontend engineering expertise with React and TypeScript.
  • Professional backend development experience in at least one language or framework, such as Node.js, Java, or Python.
  • Comfort working across the stack, contributing to production backend services and APIs, and taking ownership of customer-facing applications.
  • Staff/Principal-level experience or equivalent technical scope, including designing complex systems and driving architectural decisions that affect multiple teams or domains.
  • Ability to create technical alignment amid competing requirements, constraints, and opinions.
  • A strong record of leading through influence and developing other engineers, including mentoring experienced engineers and facilitating architecture and design discussions.
  • Ability to introduce engineering standards and help teams make high-quality technical decisions without becoming a bottleneck.
  • Strong technical depth and business and product judgment.
  • Ability to work effectively with Product, UX, Security, SRE, and engineering stakeholders, use metrics and evidence to guide decisions, and consider broader organizational outcomes.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with checkout, payments, orders, e-commerce, or marketplace systems.
  • Exposure to native Android/Kotlin or iOS/Swift development.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical direction across two engineering teams and connected domains, designing scalable frontend and backend solutions.
  • Facilitate complex architectural decisions and make data-driven trade-offs involving performance, security, reliability, maintainability, and cost; identify risks beyond individual teams.
  • Contribute hands-on across frontend and backend, shaping customer-facing experiences with React and TypeScript and contributing to backend services and APIs.
  • Influence solutions from discovery and system design through implementation and production, and help establish foundations for future native iOS and Android checkout experiences.
  • Promote architecture, performance, security, testing, observability, and reliability practices across teams.
  • Work with engineering leads and specialist teams to develop reusable patterns, guidelines, and platform capabilities for recurring technical challenges.
  • Create alignment among Checkout, Payments, Orders, Shipping, and other dependent teams when ownership and priorities cross boundaries.
  • Mentor engineers, facilitate architecture and design discussions, and provide technical direction without relying on formal authority.
  • Partner with Product, UX, and engineering leadership to identify opportunities, challenge assumptions, and translate business needs into sustainable technical strategy.
  • Use data, metrics, and industry trends to assess trade-offs, prioritize investments, and decide when to evolve existing capabilities or introduce new approaches.
