Redcare Pharmacy
•Remote

About The Position

As a Staff Software Engineer in Redcare Pharmacy’s Retail – Transaction domain, you will provide technical leadership across two engineering teams responsible for a critical customer journey. You will combine hands-on engineering with Staff-level influence to shape checkout capabilities across web and backend, and support their evolution toward native mobile experiences. You will help set architectural direction, raise engineering standards, and develop scalable solutions used by customers across Europe. The role spans frontend and backend architecture, implementation, and production. You will align work across connected domains including payments, orders, and shipping; guide complex initiatives through influence; mentor engineers; and partner with Product, UX, Security, SRE, and engineering stakeholders to connect technical decisions with customer and business outcomes. The technology stack includes React.js, Next.js, Java, Spring Boot, SwiftUI, Swift, Kotlin, Android SDK, ES6, ESI, Varnish, Docker, Google Cloud, and Kubernetes. This is a remote position based in Germany, with occasional on-site collaboration at the Berlin or Cologne offices depending on business and team requirements.

Requirements

  • Deep, hands-on frontend engineering expertise with React and TypeScript.
  • Professional backend development experience in at least one language or framework, such as Node.js, Java, or Python.
  • Comfort working across the stack, contributing to production backend services and APIs, and taking ownership of customer-facing applications.
  • Experience operating at Staff/Principal level or equivalent technical scope, including designing complex systems and driving architectural decisions affecting multiple teams or domains.
  • Ability to create technical alignment amid competing requirements, constraints, and opinions.
  • A strong record of leading through influence and developing other engineers, including mentoring experienced engineers and facilitating architecture and design discussions.
  • Ability to introduce engineering standards and enable teams to make high-quality technical decisions without becoming a bottleneck.
  • Technical depth and strong business and product judgment.
  • Ability to work effectively with Product, UX, Security, SRE, and engineering stakeholders, use metrics and evidence to guide decisions, and consider organization-wide outcomes.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with checkout, payments, orders, e-commerce, or marketplace systems.
  • Exposure to native Android/Kotlin or iOS/Swift development.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical direction across two engineering teams and connected domains, designing scalable distributed frontend and backend solutions.
  • Facilitate complex architectural decisions and make pragmatic, data-driven trade-offs involving performance, security, reliability, maintainability, and cost; identify risks extending beyond individual teams.
  • Remain hands-on across frontend and backend, shaping customer-facing React experiences and scalable Java backend capabilities from discovery and system design through implementation and production.
  • Help establish foundations for future native iOS and Android checkout experiences.
  • Drive adoption of architecture, performance, security, testing, observability, and reliability practices beyond one team.
  • Work with engineering leads and specialist teams to develop reusable patterns, guidelines, and platform capabilities for recurring technical challenges.
  • Create alignment among Checkout, Payments, Orders, Shipping, and other dependent teams when ownership and technical priorities cross boundaries.
  • Mentor engineers, facilitate architecture and design discussions, and provide technical direction through influence so teams can make stronger decisions independently.
  • Partner with Product, UX, and engineering leadership to identify opportunities, challenge assumptions, and translate business needs into sustainable technical strategy.
  • Use data, metrics, and industry trends to evaluate trade-offs, prioritize high-impact investments, and decide whether to evolve existing capabilities or introduce new technologies and approaches.
