Staff Full-Stack Engineer

About The Position

As a Staff Engineer at Capital One, you will help define the future of banking in the cloud alongside developers, machine learning experts, product managers, and people leaders. Staff Engineers are domain experts who develop practical, reusable solutions to complex problems and drive innovation that improves business outcomes through strong technology solutions. You will promote engineering excellence, support an inclusive culture, mentor engineers, and help recruit and develop talent for Capital One Tech. You will lead through technical contribution as a trusted advisor on key technologies, platforms, and capability domains. While specializing in a subject area, you will be expected to contribute across the organization and share knowledge through clear communications, code samples, blog posts, and other materials. The role includes modernizing monolithic systems into microservice architectures and event-driven platforms, shaping long-term platform strategy and API standards, and contributing hands-on while mentoring and elevating other engineers. You will also lead cross-divisional work that advances technical best practices.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science or a related quantitative field, such as Statistics, Economics, Operations Research, Analytics, Mathematics, or Engineering.
At least 7 years of experience in software engineering and solution architecture.
At least 7 years of experience in enterprise architecture and design patterns.
At least 7 years of experience in cloud computing, including AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud.
At least 7 years of experience in data architecture.

Nice To Haves

Master's degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering.
10+ years of experience in software engineering and solution architecture.
10+ years of experience in enterprise architecture and design patterns.
10+ years of experience with web technologies, including JavaScript, TypeScript, and SPA frameworks.
10+ years of experience designing and building distributed HPC and ML systems.
10+ years of experience in cloud computing, including AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud.
10+ years of experience in data architecture.
10+ years of professional coding experience in commonly used languages such as Go, Java, JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, Rust, C#, or Scala.
8+ years of experience with databases and database management systems.
10+ years of professional experience across the full system development lifecycle, from conception through architecture, implementation, testing, deployment, and production support.
8+ years of experience with public cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure), cloud-based productivity tools, or virtualization technologies.
10+ years of experience with networking protocols and integration with third-party distributed systems.
5+ years of experience mentoring senior engineers and driving professional development within technical teams.
2+ years of experience leading cross-domain architectural reviews and establishing coding and design standards.
Expertise in strategically applying GenAI and agentic solutions to solve systemic development challenges.
