Staff Full-Stack Engineer
About The Position
As a Staff Engineer at Capital One, you will help define the future of banking in the cloud alongside developers, machine learning experts, product managers, and people leaders. You will be a leading technical expert in your domain, devising practical, reusable solutions to complex problems and driving innovation to improve business outcomes. You will promote engineering excellence and an inclusive culture, mentor engineers, and help recruit and develop technical talent. The role leads through technical contribution and serves as a trusted advisor on key technologies, platforms, and capability domains. You will communicate and share expertise through materials such as code samples and blog posts, while contributing impact across the organization. You will balance hands-on technical work and innovation with mentorship, cross-divisional leadership, and long-term technology strategy.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science or a related quantitative field, such as Statistics, Economics, Operations Research, Analytics, Mathematics, or Engineering.
- At least 7 years of experience in software engineering and solution architecture.
- At least 7 years of experience in enterprise architecture and design patterns.
- At least 7 years of experience in cloud computing, such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud.
- At least 7 years of experience in data architecture.
Nice To Haves
- Master's degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering.
- 10+ years of experience in software engineering and solution architecture.
- 10+ years of experience in enterprise architecture and design patterns.
- 10+ years of experience with web technologies, including JavaScript, TypeScript, and SPA frameworks.
- Experience designing and building distributed HPC and ML systems.
- 10+ years of experience in cloud computing, such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud.
- 10+ years of experience in data architecture.
- 10+ years of professional coding experience in commonly used languages such as Go, Java, JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, Rust, C#, or Scala.
- 8+ years of experience with databases and database management systems.
- 10+ years of professional experience across the full system development lifecycle, from conception through architecture, implementation, testing, deployment, and production support.
- 8+ years of experience with public cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure), cloud-based productivity tools, or virtualization technologies.
- 10+ years of experience with networking protocols and integration with third-party distributed systems.
- 5+ years of experience mentoring senior engineers and driving professional development within technical teams.
- 2+ years of experience leading cross-domain architectural reviews and establishing coding and design standards.
- Expertise in strategically applying agentic AI coding tools to solve systemic development challenges.

- Serve as an authoritative expert on non-functional system characteristics, including performance, scalability, and operability.
- Continue learning and bring advanced technical knowledge to the community.
- Handle several projects simultaneously and balance time to maximize impact.
- Serve as a role model and mentor, coaching and strengthening the technical expertise of engineering and product teams.
- Drive modernization of monolithic systems into microservice architectures and event-driven platforms.
- Collaborate with senior engineering and architecture leaders to define long-term platform strategy and API standards.
- Balance deep, hands-on technical contribution and innovation with mentoring and developing peers and junior engineers.
- Lead cross-divisional projects that promote technological best practices and enhancements.
- Share knowledge inside and outside the organization through clear communications, code samples, blog posts, and other materials.
