Staff Forward-Deployed Engineer

TextureNew York, NY
$225,000 - $245,000Remote

About The Position

Texture is building the operating system for the energy grid, addressing the challenges of modernizing infrastructure designed for a past era. The company provides a data and software layer to enable real-time grid operations, predictive maintenance, integration of distributed energy resources, and breaking down data silos. This role involves embedding with customers, primarily smaller electric utilities and energy hardware manufacturers, to understand their needs, perform integration work, build new features, and act as the technical lead on new opportunities. The position requires translating technical concepts to non-technical audiences, owning production code, and collaborating with engineering leadership on product development. The goal is to design reference architectures that can be templated for future customers, ensuring scalability and efficiency. A key aspect is assessing the technical feasibility and approach for supporting new data classes and customer requirements.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of engineering experience with a track record of shipping production systems.
  • Ability to operate independently and make sound decisions with ambiguity.
  • Strong communication skills, particularly in explaining technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Breadth across the technology stack, including backend integration, DevOps, infrastructure, data engineering, and data science.
  • Judgment and a willingness to learn new technologies and domains.
  • Curiosity about the energy grid and its challenges.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience in forward-deployed engineering, solutions engineering, or consulting.
  • Familiarity with the energy industry (co-op utilities, DER, interconnection queue, load shifting).

Responsibilities

  • Embed with customers (electric utilities and energy hardware manufacturers) from kickoff through production, managing 3-5 concurrent accounts.
  • Participate in client operations team calls, understanding customer needs and leading technical discussions.
  • Own end-to-end software development, including integration work (connecting data from meters, sensors, OEM devices) and building features like energy-accounting, bill-credit reporting, and behavioral demand-response programs.
  • Design reference architectures for new functionalities to serve as templates for future customers.
  • Act as the technical voice on new opportunities, performing landscape analysis, identifying vendors, and assessing Texture's ability to support new data classes.
  • Translate complex technical concepts into understandable explanations for non-technical utility customers.
  • Take ownership of production code, including sharing on-call responsibilities for built systems.
  • Collaborate with the CTO and engineering team to define product roadmaps and technical specifications.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance (covered).
  • 401(k).
  • Flexible PTO.
  • Equity in the form of common stock options.
