About The Position

Takeda’s Synthetic Molecule Process Development (SMPD) organization develops robust, sustainable, and cost-effective processes for manufacturing synthetic molecule pharmaceuticals, including methods to achieve and control high standards of purity and quality. The Staff Engineer is responsible for reaction and particle engineering, developing scale-down models for studying unit operations, and transferring processes to external contract manufacturing organizations. The role uses process analytical technologies (PAT) and statistical and first-principles mathematical models to improve process understanding, development, optimization, scale-up, and troubleshooting. The Staff Engineer develops scale-down equipment and helps implement advanced process control strategies for batch and continuous processes. As a recognized technical resource in SMPD, the engineer contributes technical expertise across pipeline projects, advances departmental technologies, develops subject-matter expertise, manages outsourced activities, and represents Takeda in pre-competitive collaborations with academic and industrial partners.

  • A degree in chemical engineering is required.
  • One of the following education and experience combinations is required: Ph.D. with 0 or more years of academic, post-doctoral, or pharmaceutical industry experience; MS with 3 or more years of pharmaceutical industry experience; or BS with 5 or more years of pharmaceutical industry experience.
  • Demonstrated hands-on wet-lab experience, including safe execution of laboratory experiments and collection and interpretation of experimental data.
  • A proven scientific track record demonstrated through presentations at scientific conferences and publication of peer-reviewed manuscripts.
  • Ability to troubleshoot critical issues or problems using appropriate information, determine causes, and identify possible solutions.
  • Ability to work well on global cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, document issues and concerns, adapt communication style to the audience, communicate effectively with senior management, and contribute technical writing for internal technical documents.

  • Independently design and execute complex experimental protocols and report results.
  • Own a technical skill in its entirety and independently contribute significantly to project work, potentially across multiple projects within the functional area.
  • Provide technical leadership to project teams within the area of expertise and commit resources to execute specific project tasks.
  • Review, interpret, and communicate data across pharmaceutical sciences and project teams.
  • Assist in developing project strategy and communicate complex data and decisions within the department and cross-functionally.
  • Identify process trends and recommend and implement new technologies and innovations.
  • Serve as a recognized technical expert and resource within the function.
  • Coordinate and lead technology transfer to internal or external manufacturing sites.
  • Author relevant sections of regulatory documents, validation plans, reports, and peer-reviewed manuscripts.
  • Identify vendors and build relationships to access technologies needed to deliver pipeline goals.
  • Manage key vendor relationships across multiple projects and proactively address issues arising at vendors.
  • Represent Takeda and actively participate in pre-competitive collaborations with academic and industrial partners.
