About The Position

Palmetto is hiring a Staff Data Engineer to own the technical design of the data platform powering its products, partners, and AI agents. The platform brings together data across the customer journey, including sales, lending, installation, interconnection, and system production, to provide a governed, trustworthy view of the business with consistent metric definitions. The role will also build a secure, authorized, auditable way for people and systems to access data. This is a high-leverage individual-contributor role responsible for setting technical direction, writing foundational code, and partnering with core platform and product teams. AI agents are first-class consumers of the platform.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of data engineering experience, including time at Staff or lead level owning a platform used by multiple teams.
  • Deep experience with SQL and Python.
  • Strong database fundamentals in a modern analytical warehouse such as Snowflake or BigQuery, including schema design, query plans, and distributed computing.
  • Deep experience with dbt or an adjacent transformation framework such as SQLMesh or Dataform.
  • Experience with ETL orchestration tools such as Fivetran or Airflow.
  • Experience with infrastructure as code and container orchestration on a major cloud platform such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
  • Demonstrated agentic engineering beyond prompting, including running coding agents in loops checked by specifications and tests, and curiosity about new tools.
  • Experience producing design documents that resolve cross-team architecture questions.
  • Clear written and verbal communication with non-technical partners.
  • Working knowledge of API design, authentication and authorization such as OAuth/OIDC and RBAC, and PII handling.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of reporting tools such as Looker and Hex.

Responsibilities

  • Build and own data products that provide trustworthy data from bronze through gold for analysts, engineers, product teams, partners, and AI tools.
  • Shape semantic context, documentation, and interfaces so AI agents can use governed definitions and produce answers traceable to their sources.
  • Implement data classification, masking, access policies, and change control as code, and prepare the platform for SOC 2 and related compliance audits.
  • Build, operate, and orchestrate ingestion pipelines as code, with CI/CD, observability, alerting, and SLAs.
  • Partner with finance, operations, product, and engineering to understand evolving data requirements.
  • Design and operate a secure, authorized, low-latency interface for products, partners, and agents to consume data.
  • Review code, mentor teammates, and provide engineering teams with templates and CI checks to help them ship trusted data.

  • Unlimited PTO.
  • Medical coverage.
  • Dental coverage.
