About The Position

Greenlight Rent is hiring a Staff Engineer for its data team. This is a hands-on senior software engineering role responsible for building the systems that produce, move, and serve company data—not only downstream pipelines and queries. The Staff Engineer will set technical direction for data flows across application services and APIs, the data warehouse, models, and business tools, and partner with product, finance, and operations to deliver reliable software and trustworthy data for rental-housing needs. The role is part of a small engineering team of about three engineers. Most of the week is spent building, with the remainder focused on leading the team and developing its people. The position also leads a few direct reports.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of professional software engineering experience, including technical leadership at the senior or staff level.
  • Deep expertise in at least one modern backend language, such as Python, Ruby, Go, TypeScript, or Java, and a record of building and shipping application systems, not only data pipelines.
  • Strong data engineering skills, including SQL, data modeling, data warehouses such as Snowflake or BigQuery, transformation tools such as dbt, and orchestration tools such as Prefect or Airflow.
  • Experience designing and scaling APIs, distributed systems, and relational databases.
  • Hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure on AWS or GCP and CI/CD.
  • Product sense and interest in why work is being built and whether it achieves its intended results.
  • Fluency with AI coding tools and sound judgment about when their output is inadequate.
  • A track record of leading ambiguous, high-impact projects to completion.
  • Clear written and verbal communication with technical and non-technical partners.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in fintech, insurtech, payments, or proptech.
  • Familiarity with regulated environments, such as SOC 2, PCI, or consumer-finance rules.
  • Experience building 0-to-1 products or data platforms at a startup or growth-stage company.
  • Experience managing engineers, or a wish to grow into it.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build Greenlight Rent’s data foundations, including event and data models, ingestion from application databases and partner integrations, and the warehouse and transformation layer.
  • Write production application code, including services, APIs, and jobs that generate and use data.
  • Own measurable outcomes with product and business partners and make scope and sequencing decisions.
  • Own the reliability and correctness of business-critical data, including monthly close, reporting, and partner data.
  • Write high-quality code and set standards for testing, code review, observability, and data quality, including reviewing AI-generated code critically.
  • Make pragmatic build-versus-buy and other tradeoff decisions, and document them clearly.
  • Mentor engineers through pairing, design reviews, and feedback, and lead a few direct reports.
  • Keep sensitive financial and personal data secure and compliant.

Benefits

  • Competitive cash compensation package, including base salary, milestone-based bonus, and other financial perks.
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage with up to 90% employer contribution, eligible from the start date.
  • 401(k), HSA, and life and disability insurance coverage, with $0 employee contribution for additional insurances.
  • Unlimited PTO policy.
  • Generous paid parental leave.
  • Stock option plan.
  • Remote-first work culture with opportunities to collaborate in person as a team.
  • Monthly lifestyle stipend for meals, wellness, or co-working.
