About The Position

This Staff Attorney will support our Complex Litigation Team, which is responsible for providing top-quality representation to Hartford insureds in litigated matters for some of our most complex and high-exposure product, liability, premises operations, auto, general liability and construction injury liability matters. As an in-house, remote Staff Attorney for The Hartford, you will join a collaborative environment where you will have direct contact with our Claims Professionals while working from home! Work on High-Exposure, Complex Matters: Join a team that handles some of Hartford’s most challenging and high-value litigation, including product liability, construction injury, premises liability, auto and general liability matters. Sharpen Your Litigation Strategy Skills: Analyze intricate legal issues, develop case strategy, conduct extensive legal research, and draft substantive motions that have a meaningful impact on case outcomes. Partner with Experienced Trial Attorneys: Work alongside accomplished complex litigation attorneys, gaining mentorship and hands-on experience in some of the organization’s most significant cases. Meaningful Involvement in Trial Preparation: Participate in depositions, mediations, arbitrations, expert coordination, and trial preparation while helping build compelling case themes and defense strategies. Flexibility Meets Innovation: Enjoy the autonomy of a remote work environment while leveraging advanced case management systems and progressive AI-enabled tools. Work from home day to day, with in-person collaboration and appearances as needed.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years of legal practice experience handling tort defense matters.
  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
  • Domicile in California, active license to practice in California, and ability to appear in applicable local state and federal courts.
  • Member in good standing of California State Bar.
  • Strong legal research and writing skills (writing sample required).
  • Extensive experience writing substantive legal motions, including but not limited to motions for summary judgment and/or adjudication, demurrers and motions to strike.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize duties and time are a must.
  • Strong communication, computer and technology skills and the ability to quickly leverage new software are required.
  • Demonstrated expertise and familiarity in the handling of claim cases and litigation.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze intricate substantive and procedural legal and factual issues.
  • Conduct extensive, well-reasoned legal research.
  • Draft pleadings, dispositive motions ( e.g., motions for summary judgment, demurrers, motions to strike, etc.), discovery motions, discovery, and discovery responses.
  • Compile exhibits and review documents; prepare memoranda that analyze evidence and recommend next steps; find and coordinate with experts; conduct legal research and analysis; prepare trial documents, among other tasks.
  • Assist with trial preparation / possibly attend trial and participate in trial tasks.
  • Provide effective and timely communications, information, legal advice and other services to the senior attorneys on the complex litigation team, clients, and claims customers on legal and factual issues in a technology driven environment.
  • Communicate with court, witnesses, experts, opposing counsel, and co-counsel in a manner consistent with established office procedures.
  • May take depositions, appear in court, attend client and expert meetings and assist with mediation, arbitration and trial and may communicate with clients.
  • Apply strong legal research and writing skills, attention to detail, organization, strategic thinking, and collaboration to support complex litigation matters and deliver high-quality work across all aspects of your responsibilities.
