About The Position

Quizlet is hiring a Sr. Staff Product Manager, Payments and Subscription Lifecycle, to own how learners pay, how subscriptions renew, and how failed payments are handled. The role defines strategy and roadmap across checkout, billing infrastructure, and subscription lifecycle mechanics on web, iOS, and Android, with the goal of increasing successful payments and durable net revenue while reducing billing frustration and involuntary churn. Quizlet’s billing environment includes multiple gateways, merchant-of-record configurations, app stores, tax capabilities, and currencies. This individual contributor role has no direct reports and partners with Engineering, Finance, Accounting, Legal, Customer Support, and subscription and growth product managers. The role sets payments and billing strategy, improves checkout and payment success, owns subscription lifecycle behavior, and treats failed-payment recovery as a measurable revenue opportunity. It leads the billing platform and vendor roadmap, including vendor selection and commercial negotiations, and establishes requirements for tax calculation, invoicing, refunds, and billing communications. It also enables new offers and international payments, measures impact through data and controlled experiments, coordinates responses to billing incidents, and aligns senior stakeholders on investments and tradeoffs. The role owns payment and billing mechanics throughout the subscription lifecycle. Subscriptions owns pricing, packaging, paywalls, and conversion before checkout; this role provides billing feasibility and economics input. Growth owns international strategy; this role owns supporting payment capabilities. Content, Trust and Safety, and unrelated launches are outside the role. This is a hybrid position based in Quizlet’s San Francisco office. Employees are asked to work in the office at least two days per week, Wednesday and Thursday.

Requirements

  • Several years of direct ownership of payments or subscription billing as a product manager in a scaled consumer subscription business, including hands-on work in an enterprise billing platform; experience limited to growth, paywalls, or adjacent monetization work is insufficient.
  • Deep knowledge of gateway and acquirer mechanics, including decline codes, network tokens, 3D Secure authentication, velocity checks, and merchant-of-record models, with the ability to investigate configurations and evaluate architecture with Engineering.
  • A track record of improving authorization, recurring billing, and dunning, and the ability to explain specific changes, their incremental revenue impact, and consequences for customer experience and costs.
  • Ability to retrieve and analyze authorization and cohort data independently, design sound experiments on payment infrastructure, and distinguish payment failures from pricing or product-value issues.
  • Cross-border payments experience and experience leading vendor selection with meaningful commercial stakes through contract; ability to evaluate performance, reliability, fees, and operational dependencies together.
  • Experience shaping strategy across product areas, delivering company-level impact, influencing senior stakeholders, and balancing immediate revenue opportunities with durable shared capabilities.
  • Sound judgment during billing incidents involving technical, financial, legal, and customer concerns; comfort working at invoice and decline-code level while keeping partners aligned on resolution.
  • Experience partnering with Finance, Accounting, and Legal on billing accuracy, tax and invoicing requirements, and customer obligations, and translating specialist input into clear product requirements and reliable execution.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with both major app-store billing systems and web subscriptions, including subscription transitions and consistency of access across platforms.
  • Experience with billing-platform migrations, multiple merchant-of-record configurations, or tax-engine integrations.

Responsibilities

  • Set payments and billing strategy, identify revenue loss, customer friction, and platform gaps, and define a multi-year direction and investment sequence with company-level outcomes.
  • Improve the purchase experience across web, iOS, and Android, including transitions between app-store and web subscriptions; guide payment methods, authentication, routing, and authorization improvements using funnel and processor data.
  • Define billing and access behavior through trials, renewals, upgrades, downgrades, cancellation, and reactivation, partnering with Engineering to maintain consistent subscription states, charges, and access across platforms.
  • Improve failed-payment recovery through decline handling, account updates, network tokens, retry strategies, and customer communications while avoiding unnecessary costs and customer frustration.
  • Lead the billing platform and vendor roadmap, evaluate platforms and payment providers, conduct vendor selection and commercial negotiations with Finance, Legal, and procurement, and guide integrations or migrations with Engineering.
  • Own product requirements for tax calculation, invoicing, refunds, and billing communications with Finance and Accounting; work with Legal to translate auto-renewal and dispute obligations into product behavior and operational processes.
  • Build reusable billing capabilities for subscription changes and market expansion; partner with subscriptions on billing feasibility and margins, and with growth on currencies, local payment methods, and cross-border purchase barriers.
  • Investigate authorization and cohort data, use controlled and ramped experiments, and measure incremental recovery and net revenue alongside processing costs, refunds, chargebacks, and customer outcomes.
  • Coordinate diagnosis, mitigation, and customer resolution when billing incidents occur; establish rollout safeguards, monitoring, and follow-through to prevent recurring incidents.
  • Align senior stakeholders on platform investments and tradeoffs, strengthen shared decision practices, and mentor partners to improve the organization’s ability to deliver reliable payment and subscription experiences.
