About The Position

L3Harris is seeking a Senior Specialist Thermal Analyst to contribute to multidisciplinary engineering teams designing, analyzing, and testing optical systems for harsh space and ground environments. The role applies aerospace thermal engineering knowledge to spacecraft subsystems and instruments, including conductive, convective, and radiative analyses; heat pipes and radiative heat transfer; and thermal control hardware such as thermal blankets, surface treatments, heater tapes, and thermistors. The analyst considers interactions with optical structures to minimize optical errors and achieve operational temperatures, using custom software, Thermal Desktop, and finite element analysis packages. The role may include mentoring other Thermal Analysts. The position supports system-level thermal design and development, payload integration and testing, and risk mitigation for space-based environments. Work spans complex mechanical hardware, precision mechanisms, electromechanical devices, electronics packaging, deployable mechanisms, avionics, and thermal and ground-based systems. Program activities include requirements derivation and verification, architecture development, loads derivation, trade studies, design sensitivity and optimization, preliminary and final design analyses, documentation, and system test leadership. The analyst may lead thermal design and analysis as an IPT lead, interface with customer technical leads and management, present results at formal reviews, develop thermal test plans, support new business, and mentor junior staff. The position is located in Wilmington, Massachusetts, with a 9/80 schedule: employees work 80 hours over nine days in each 14-day period and have every other Friday off. Relocation assistance is available to qualified applicants. A sign-on bonus of up to $20,000 may be included in an offer package. Applicants must be able to obtain a TS/SCI clearance upon hire.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or another related engineering or science discipline and at least 6 years of relevant experience; alternatively, a graduate degree and at least 4 years of relevant experience; or, in lieu of a degree, at least 10 years of relevant experience.
  • At least 3 years of experience with thermal analysis tools such as Thermal Desktop, Sinda, Thermal Fluent, or Icepak.
  • At least 1 year of experience with thermal vacuum testing.
  • Professional experience working on aerospace or space programs.
  • Ability to obtain a TS/SCI clearance upon being hired.

Nice To Haves

  • Active TS/SCI clearance.
  • Experience with thermal analysis of mechanical and electronic systems in space, air, or ground environments.
  • Strong analytical skills, including using or directing finite element analysis.
  • Experience with finite element analysis software.
  • Ability to support design decisions with well-documented engineering analyses and calculations.
  • Ability to analyze problems and quickly identify and drive toward root causes.
  • Experience as a lead engineer, project engineer, or IPT lead.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Responsibilities

  • Perform thermal design and analysis on complex mechanical hardware, including precision mechanisms, electromechanical devices, aerospace mechanisms, electronics packaging, deployable mechanisms, avionics, and thermal and ground-based systems.
  • Create and analyze design concepts using finite element analysis (FEA) and thermal analysis software.
  • Support requirements derivation and verification, system architecture development, loads derivation, trade studies, design sensitivity and optimization studies, and preliminary and final design analysis.
  • Generate analysis documentation, including presentation materials and deliverable data packages.
  • Lead system test activities and develop thermal test plans to manufacture and test payload sensor systems.
  • Organize thermal design and analysis as an IPT lead and interface with customer technical leads and management.
  • Document and present design and analysis results to customers at formal gate and design reviews.
  • Support new business opportunities and mentor junior-level staff.
  • Manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing situations.
