About The Position

Apple’s Information Systems and Technology (IS&T) organization supports Apple’s devices, transactions, and technology systems. Sales and Operations Engineering, part of IS&T, builds technology for Apple’s global operations, sales, and supply chain, connecting sales platforms with operational infrastructure. As a Senior Software Engineer, you will design, build, and scale enterprise back-end systems that power critical Apple products and services. You will develop, document, and maintain production Java code from architecture through implementation, independently owning complex and often ambiguous technical problems and driving cross-functional solutions with minimal guidance. The role involves designing APIs and microservices, working with core Java internals, optimizing data-layer performance, and ensuring secure, reliable deployment. You will work directly with business leaders, application owners, developers, and project managers to take projects from inception to completion and deliver commitments on time. You will also mentor teammates, shape architectural direction, and contribute to related disciplines and organization-wide initiatives. The role requires working independently and under pressure on sophisticated, large-scale system architecture.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent work experience.
  • At least 8 years of experience designing and developing scalable enterprise-level back-end solutions.
  • At least 4 years of Java experience, including concurrency, memory management, and performance optimization.
  • Proficiency in object-oriented programming principles, data structures, algorithms, and software design patterns such as GoF, with a focus on testable, maintainable, and extensible back-end code.
  • Experience building production applications with the Spring ecosystem, including dependency injection, auto-configuration, reactive programming with WebFlux, and Spring-based microservice patterns.
  • Solid understanding of advanced JVM internals, including garbage collection, memory allocation, JIT, and JNI.
  • Experience with API design and implementation, including RESTful principles, gRPC, GraphQL, contract-first design, API versioning, gateway patterns, rate limiting, backward compatibility, and long-term API evolution.
  • Experience with message-driven and event-driven architectures, messaging systems such as Kafka, RabbitMQ, or ActiveMQ, event sourcing, CQRS, and reliable asynchronous communication between distributed services.

Nice To Haves

  • Track record of leading software projects as a team tech lead and mentoring software engineers.
  • Hands-on experience using GenAI coding tools such as Claude, Copilot, or Codex to accelerate development, improve code quality, and streamline debugging and testing.
  • Experience implementing authentication and authorization systems, identity protocols such as OAuth2, OIDC, SAML, and JWT, SSO architectures, RBAC/ABAC, and integrations with identity providers and directory services.
  • Experience with NLP and generative AI systems, including LLMs, RAG architectures, embedding pipelines, vector databases, fine-tuning, and prompt engineering for production applications.
  • Experience with caching strategies and in-memory data technologies such as Redis, Memcached, Hazelcast, or Ehcache, including cache invalidation, distributed caching, and session management for high-throughput applications.
  • Experience with relational and NoSQL databases, including schema design, query optimization, and performance tuning through execution plan analysis, indexing strategy, and query rewriting.
