About The Position

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska is hiring a Senior Software Engineer to help build and scale an AI platform that improves members’ healthcare experiences. The platform is live and supports members navigating health coverage; its next phase involves specialized AI agents collaborating on clinical questions, prior authorizations, care gaps, and benefits guidance. The engineer will shape the multi-agent architecture, integration patterns, and evaluation systems that support reliable growth. The primary focus is agent design and orchestration. The role includes designing a LangGraph-based orchestration layer, standardizing how agents integrate, preserving context across conversational turns and agent handoffs, and implementing safety and response-normalization controls. It also includes defining retrieval architecture for benefits documents, formularies, and policy content using Azure AI Search, and building a versioned, testable prompt architecture. The position allows remote flexibility and requires one day per week in the Omaha, Nebraska office. The ideal candidate lives within driving distance of the office. Candidates living in approved states—Florida, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, and Texas—may travel to headquarters. The company is unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa at this time.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • 4–7 years of experience in software engineering.
  • 2–3 years building and operating production LLM or agentic AI systems.
  • Production experience with agentic AI involving multiple agents, explicit state management, and real users relying on accurate answers; LLM wrappers, single-agent chatbot demos, and RAG tutorials do not meet this requirement.
  • Ability to describe specific decisions made in a multi-agent system, including state management, handling agent failures mid-conversation, and keeping the system governable as agents are added.
  • Production use of LangGraph, AutoGen, or custom graph-based orchestration, with knowledge of its limitations and practical workarounds.
  • Experience debugging retrieval quality, iterating on chunking strategies, and managing stale knowledge bases in a live system.
  • Experience building evaluation systems, including golden datasets, automated regression testing, and domain-appropriate accuracy metrics; an evaluation suite must have caught a production regression before users reported it.
  • Experience in healthcare, insurance, fintech, or legal domains, with safeguards designed for AI systems where incorrect answers have consequences.
  • Strong knowledge of Python and ability to work in an existing codebase and extend it with an AI layer.
  • Ability to work with the target stack: Azure OpenAI, Azure AI Search, and Azure Container Apps.
  • Must be able to perform the essential duties satisfactorily, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Must be eligible to work without employer sponsorship or takeover of employment visa sponsorship, as sponsorship is unavailable at this time.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in an Agile/Scrum environment.
  • Creative, lateral thinking in conceptual and practical applications.
  • Strong customer focus and commitment to addressing customer needs.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Emotional intelligence.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build a LangGraph-based multi-agent orchestration layer that classifies member intent and routes requests to the appropriate agent, with stateful, context-preserving, failure-tolerant behavior.
  • Create a standardized agent integration contract covering input and output schemas, confidence signaling, latency SLAs, and fallback behavior.
  • Maintain member context across conversational turns and agent handoffs, including awareness of prior exchanges, agent activity, and retrieved information.
  • Build guardrails for clinical safety, PHI handling at the LLM layer, response normalization, consistent tone, and compliance constraints.
  • Architect the RAG pipeline for benefits documents, formularies, and policy content using Azure AI Search, including ingestion strategy, chunking, hybrid search configuration, and retrieval quality standards.
  • Develop a versioned prompt registry, structured output contracts, and few-shot patterns so prompts can be tested, rolled back, and understood by the team.
  • Extend an existing software codebase with the AI layer.
  • Perform the essential duties of the position satisfactorily; other duties may be assigned.
