Sr Software Engineer
About The Position
McGraw Hill is hiring a Senior Software Engineer for its Learning Tools team to support its digital learning platform. The role involves designing, building, and leading delivery of services used in Higher Education. The engineer will work across the full stack, including Angular, cloud technologies, and modern CI/CD practices, helping ensure products are scalable, accessible, high quality, and customer-focused. The working environment is a general office environment that includes remote work. The Senior Software Engineer will design and implement complex software solutions, lead technical projects, contribute to architectural decisions, and mentor junior engineers. The services developed provide learning content used by millions of students.
Requirements
- At least 4 years of experience in product or enterprise software development.
- Experience with frontend frameworks, specifically Angular.
- Strong hands-on experience across the full software stack, including frontend, backend/API, databases, and infrastructure.
- Strong understanding of software design patterns and architectural principles.
- Strong understanding of accessibility guidelines.
- Experience with cloud technologies such as AWS, Azure, or GCP.
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines.
- Proven technical abilities in software development, testing, monitoring, performance tuning, and deployment pipelines.
- Focus on application quality and testing practices, including unit, integration, and end-to-end testing, code coverage analysis, and automated software inspection.
- Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
- Passion for engineering best practices.
- Strong sense of customer empathy and commitment to delighting customers.
- Ability to work across functional and domain boundaries to deliver software on time and with quality.
Nice To Haves
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience is preferred.
- Experience with Angular 12+, Node.js, RESTful Web Services, CI/CD, Docker, Terraform, AWS, MySQL, and accessibility (A11y) is preferred.
- PHP, Go, Python, or other backend language experience is a plus.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop scalable, efficient, and maintainable software across frontend, backend/API, database, and infrastructure layers.
- Lead technical projects and contribute to architectural decisions.
- Collaborate with product managers and other stakeholders to define requirements.
- Implement coding, testing, and deployment best practices.
- Contribute to technical documentation and support the testing process.
- Promote engineering best practices to ensure quality, stability, performance, resiliency, and maintainability.
- Mentor junior team members and share knowledge and practices with other teams.
- Champion the customer’s voice and build products with customer empathy.
- Support other projects and duties as assigned.
