Sr Software Engineer II - GCP, Java/Python - The Personalization, Brand, and Communications Technology
About The Position
The Personalization, Brand, and Communications Technology team builds Enterprise Personalization products, including batch and real-time analytical, machine learning, and modeling solutions using modern cloud-native technologies. Its platform supports scalable personalization across customer touchpoints and business domains, including 21+ channels, approximately 15 million daily transactions, and customer experiences in 25 markets. The team is expanding its Enterprise Orchestration Platform using cloud, real-time intelligence, and scalable machine-learning solutions. The Senior Software Engineer owns technical aspects of assigned applications and performs hands-on architecture, design, and development of personalization systems. The role operates as a senior engineer on an agile team, spends approximately 60–70% of its time coding and testing, and collaborates with peers, stakeholders, and product owners on product releases, feature planning, prioritization, and technical requirements. The engineer also supports application availability and continuous improvement.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- At least 8 years of software engineering experience, with hands-on expertise building scalable enterprise applications and distributed systems.
- Proven experience designing and developing cloud-native solutions on GCP using Java or Python and modern API-driven architectures.
- Strong experience building scalable batch and real-time data-processing solutions using technologies such as Spark, BigQuery, Dataflow, Pub/Sub, and GKE.
- Hands-on expertise in application design, microservices, automated testing, CI/CD, and cloud deployment patterns.
- Strong understanding of data structures, algorithms, system design, and distributed computing principles.
- Ability to translate complex business problems into scalable technical solutions and work effectively in ambiguous environments.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, including the ability to collaborate across global teams.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor junior engineers, drive technical excellence, and stay current with emerging technologies and industry trends.
- Eligibility to work in the U.S. for American Express; the company will not pursue visa sponsorship.

- Experience using modern AI-assisted development tools such as Devin AI, Claude, GitHub Copilot, or similar platforms to improve engineering productivity, code quality, and delivery efficiency.
- Experience with machine-learning, analytical, or modeling platforms in batch and/or real-time environments.

Responsibilities
- Own all technical aspects of software development for assigned applications.
- Perform hands-on architecture, design, and development of personalization systems supporting multiple business units across the Enterprise Orchestration Platform.
- Function as a senior engineer on an agile team and help drive consistent development practices.
- Write code and unit tests, work on API specifications and automation, and conduct code reviews and testing.
- Develop a deep understanding of integrations with other American Express systems and platforms in supported domains.
- Refactor code, use visualization and other techniques to accelerate concepts, deliver continuous improvement, and identify opportunities to adopt innovative technologies.
- Provide ongoing support for application availability.
- Work with product owners on blueprints and annual planning for feature sets that affect multiple platforms and products.
- Collaborate with product owners to prioritize sprint features and manage technical requirements based on industry trends, new technologies, known defects, and issues.
- Collaborate with peers and stakeholders through ongoing product and platform releases.
