Sr. Project Engineer - Launch Infrastructure

BLUE ORIGIN•Los Angeles, CA
•$145,188 - $203,263

About The Position

Blue Origin is seeking a senior project engineer to plan and deliver orbital launch infrastructure from the owner’s side. The role bridges long-range strategic planning and tactical execution, including identifying future launch and test sites, shaping infrastructure concepts into buildable plans, and owning delivery through design and construction. The position determines whether launch pads are built to intent, on schedule, and in the right locations. The engineer works with launch vehicle system architects, internal business units, mission operations, fluids, and command and control, as well as A&E firms, construction contractors, and government and regulatory partners. Work may include agency environmental planning, reviewing design submissions, resolving construction RFIs, preparing early cost estimates, and communicating schedule, budget, risk, and opportunity information to executive and field teams. The role is part of Blue Origin Operations, which includes Integrated Supply Chain, Test Operations, Safety, Quality, and Mission Assurance, with manufacturing and supply chain support across Blue Origin facilities.

  • 8+ years of relevant engineering or project management experience.
  • 3+ years of relevant launch infrastructure, test facility, or land development experience.
  • Experience working with state or federal agencies on permitting, land use, and development.
  • Ability to evaluate sites for infrastructure feasibility, including utilities, access, and operational safety clearances.
  • Ability to read and work from technical plans, drawings, specifications, and modeling applications.
  • Experience with project scoping, budgeting, and scheduling at day-to-day and overall construction-management levels.
  • Familiarity with standard construction procedures, best practices, means and methods, and work safety standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage technically complex projects from concept through completion using independent judgment.

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident (current Green Card holder).

  • Ability to perform hands-on field work in heat, cold, rain, tight quarters, or at heights.

Nice To Haves

  • Direct experience working at or with Vandenberg SFB, Western Range operations, or 30th Space Wing / Space Launch Delta 30 coordination.
  • Extensive experience with infrastructure requirements for space launch or test vehicle systems, including ground support equipment, site civil, structural, and support facilities.
  • Experience identifying, assessing, and developing greenfield launch or test site locations.
  • Familiarity with hazardous operations siting requirements, explosive safety quantity-distance (ESQD) arcs, and operational safety clearance planning.
  • Familiarity with FAA commercial launch site regulations (14 CFR Part 420/450).
  • Familiarity with NEPA and the federal environmental review process.
  • CAD and 3D modeling fluency.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and evaluate future launch and test site locations based on company growth, vehicle roadmaps, and operational needs.
  • Develop conceptual site layouts, master plans, and rough-order-of-magnitude cost estimates, accounting for utilities, civil development, environmental constraints, and hazardous operations clearances.
  • Translate vehicle and operations requirements into planning documents by working with launch vehicle system architects and internal business units to define infrastructure needs across near-, medium-, and long-term horizons.
  • Own the full lifecycle of design and construction projects as the Blue Origin owner, including writing statements of work, directing A&E and construction contractors on scope and schedule, managing change orders, and delivering projects on budget.
  • Review and approve design deliverables, construction RFIs, and submittals, maintaining design intent and program requirements.
  • Coordinate environmental regulatory planning and compliance, including NEPA assessments, Environmental Baseline Surveys, and agency permitting.
  • Serve as the interface between internal stakeholders and external partners, including A&E firms, construction contractors, Space Force, FAA, NASA, and state agencies.
  • Identify project risks and opportunities early, communicate them, and drive them to closure; honestly communicate schedule and budget impacts.
  • Communicate effectively with executive leadership and field personnel.
  • Perform hands-on field work in varied conditions, including heat, cold, rain, tight quarters, or heights.
