About The Position

Rivian is seeking a highly motivated, experienced, multidisciplinary mechanical engineer to develop infotainment hardware components as part of its electrical hardware team. The infotainment system includes displays, microphones, speakers, and amplifier modules. The role works with domain teams, mechanical architecture, internal teams, and external vendors to define requirements, evaluate design options, and integrate modules into vehicles. It considers integration needs such as ergonomics, UI/UX, EMC, serviceability, manufacturing feasibility, thermal performance, durability, mounting, clearances, NVH, ingress protection, functionality, and perceived quality. The engineer develops and verifies designs intended to deliver low-mass, low-cost, durable components and modules.

Requirements

  • At least 4–7 years of industry experience in automotive or another industry such as consumer electronics, audio, displays, biomedical, or aerospace.
  • B.S. degree or higher in mechanical engineering, or relevant equivalent experience.
  • Experience designing components or systems including speakers, microphones, amplifiers, displays, or brackets.
  • Experience with UI/UX considerations, Class A surface integration, and packaging.
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams to innovate and bring ideas and solutions into products.
  • Experience working with suppliers or vendors through prototype, engineering validation, design validation, and process validation.
  • Proficiency in CAD design; Catia V5, V6, or 3DX is preferred, though equivalent systems are considered.
  • Strong CAD structure and organization skills.
  • Experience solving electrical architecture challenges, grounding issues, ingress protection challenges, structural stiffness challenges, thermal mitigation, acoustic sealing, structural and optical bonding, BSR issues, and EMC issues.
  • Strong root-cause analysis, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to lead component drawing creation, including GD&T to ASME Y14.5 standards, and support applicable tolerance analyses.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing methods such as sheet metal stamping, injection-molded plastics, cast metals, CNC machining, and 3D printing.
  • Workable knowledge of DFMEA principles and execution.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced surfacing and solid-modeling expertise.
  • Experience with EV vehicle systems, automotive design and manufacturing practices, and low-voltage electrical system integration; direct experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead mechanical development of infotainment modules as part of the electrical hardware team.
  • Partner with domain and mechanical architecture teams to define mechanical component requirements and conduct trade studies to optimize integration for ergonomics, manufacturing, and design.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to evaluate change impacts and development needs.
  • Work with internal teams and external vendors to design and integrate modules into the vehicle.
  • Develop and document component mechanical functional requirements based on product requirements for custom, semi-custom, and off-the-shelf components.
  • Guide thermal and structural FEA studies to optimize component designs within vehicles.
  • Use first principles, critical thinking, and scientific engineering methodologies to identify and solve issues.
  • Consider integration factors including UI/UX, EMC, service, manufacturing feasibility, thermal performance, durability, mounting, clearances, NVH, water and dust ingress, functionality, and perceived quality.
  • Complete component design verification plans to deliver low-mass, low-cost, durable parts and modules.
  • Lead component drawing creation, including GD&T to ASME Y14.5 standards, in support of tolerance analyses.
  • Identify optimization opportunities based on CAE and testing results.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned within the scope of the position.
