About The Position

The Sr Gas Injection Engineer provides technical leadership for the design, construction, commissioning, operation, and optimization of acid-gas conditioning, compression, metering, piping, and injection systems handling CO2/H2S streams. The role supports safe, reliable operation of the Company's Permian Basin surface facilities and associated acid-gas injection (AGI) wells through troubleshooting, performance monitoring, process safety, mechanical integrity, and compliance with operating and permit limits. The engineer is the primary technical resource for existing and planned Class II AGI wells in the Permian Basin. The role supports applicable Section 45Q qualification and substantiation and coordinates with Operations, Maintenance and Reliability, Capital Projects, EHS, Regulatory, Measurement, Subsurface/Geoscience, Well Operations, Tax, Legal, Finance, and third parties.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree (four-year degree) required; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the stated education requirements.
  • At least eight years of relevant engineering experience in acid-gas injection, sour-gas processing, gas processing, midstream, upstream oil and gas, compression, underground injection, or a related industry.
  • Direct experience designing high-pressure acid-gas compression and injection systems, with deep expertise in either surface facilities and rotating equipment or injection-well engineering and demonstrated working capability in the other.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting operating facilities or injection wells, including troubleshooting, maintenance, integrity, and performance optimization.
  • Detailed knowledge of New Mexico Class II AGI permitting, reporting, operating compliance, mechanical integrity testing, H2S requirements, and plugging and abandonment.
  • Working knowledge of applicable Section 45Q requirements for secure geological storage, mass balance, MRV, certification, audit support, and recapture.
  • Experience with process simulation and hydraulic modeling tools and applicable API, ASME, AMPP/NACE, OSHA, and process safety practices.
  • Ability to communicate across operations, maintenance and reliability, engineering, geoscience, regulatory, tax, legal, and executive functions.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain required site credentials and H2S training.
  • No licensure or certification is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree.
  • Fifteen or more years of relevant experience.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical ownership of acid-gas conditioning, compression, cooling, metering, piping, pressure control, overpressure protection, wellhead equipment, and facility-to-well interfaces.
  • Develop and review design bases, PFDs, P&IDs, heat and material balances, equipment specifications, controls, safeguards, and operating philosophies.
  • Provide technical quality assurance through FEED, detailed design, procurement, construction, commissioning, startup, and closeout.
  • Perform process simulation, compressor performance evaluation, facility and wellbore hydraulics, phase-behavior, relief and depressurization, injection-capacity, injectivity, and injection-well nodal analyses.
  • Define equipment, well, reservoir, and permit operating envelopes.
  • Evaluate stream composition, water content, corrosion, materials compatibility, hydrates or solid CO2, Joule-Thomson cooling, rapid gas decompression, and sour- and acid-gas service requirements.
  • Troubleshoot compressor, process, metering, and injection-well performance.
  • Use operating and well data to improve safety, reliability, efficiency, and injectivity.
  • Establish safe operating limits, alarm and trip setpoints, startup and shutdown procedures, emergency shutdown and depressurization philosophies, and operator-response guidance.
  • Support PHAs, HAZOPs, LOPAs, SIL reviews, MOCs, PSSRs, incident investigations, and emergency planning, addressing CO2 asphyxiation, oxygen deficiency, H2S, high pressure, stored energy, low-temperature hazards, leak detection, isolation, and ventilation.
  • Support mechanical integrity for surface equipment, wellhead equipment, tubing, casing, cement, packers, and monitoring systems.
  • Plan and interpret well tests, logs, and sampling programs, and develop workover and remediation scopes.
  • Develop equipment reliability strategies for acid-gas compressors and associated systems, including equipment criticality, preventive and predictive maintenance, condition monitoring, critical spares, failure analysis, and repair and overhaul scopes.
  • Support root-cause failure analyses and bad-actor elimination for recurring compressor, cooler, valve, instrumentation, and wellhead equipment failures.
  • Maintain detailed knowledge of the federal Class II UIC framework and New Mexico Oil Conservation Division requirements for Class II AGI wells.
  • Develop working knowledge of Railroad Commission of Texas requirements as future projects warrant.
  • Train operations personnel and engineers and manage consultants, vendors, and well-service providers.
  • Support applicable Section 45Q qualification and substantiation for secure geological storage.
