About The Position

The Minnesota Star Tribune is seeking a talented and driven reporter for the sports department to cover breaking news and live events and develop enterprise stories. This assignment could involve in-person coverage of professional and college sports, as well as high school sports for the Star Tribune's Strib Varsity franchise. There are also opportunities in podcasting, video and social media. Candidates should have reporting experience and a demonstrated interest in sports, as well as the ability to work independently under deadline pressure. This student will work collaboratively with editors, photographers and other reporters for a Top-10 sports department, as recognized by the Associated Press Sports Editors, and gain invaluable real-world experience in a big-time sports market with seven professional teams, Big Ten athletics and a thriving preps scene.

Requirements

  • Talented, driven college juniors, seniors and graduate students
  • Excellent communication and writing skills
  • Flexibility and the ability to handle deadline pressure
  • Proficient with web research tools
  • Proficient with social media tools
  • Proficient with InCopy or similar publishing software
  • Currently legally authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship for employment visa status
  • Five to 10 of your best published clips demonstrating your ability to report and write clear, compelling stories on deadlines
  • A memo noting one thing you would change about the Star Tribune to better serve our readers, and how your skills could facilitate such an improvement
  • A resume detailing your journalism experience
  • Three references, including their titles, phone numbers and email addresses
  • Two letters of recommendation. At least one of those letters should come from an editor who’s seen you work in a professional environment on deadline. Please do not submit letters of reference from fellow student journalists.
