About The Position

The City of Sioux City Parks and Recreation Department is seeking an enthusiastic instructor for its Learn to Skate program at the IBP Ice Center. Instructors teach ice-skating skills to participants of all ages and abilities and create a fun, safe, and encouraging learning environment. The program consists of three six-week sessions running from October through May. Weekend evening hours are required, and each lesson lasts approximately 1.5 hours, including setup, instruction, and teardown. Instructors communicate with participants, parents, and staff. The broader Sports Official duties include officiating sporting events and activities, applying rules, monitoring safety and equipment, keeping time and recording results, resolving disputes, communicating with participants and staff, and supporting event operations. Work may take place indoors or outdoors depending on the activity and may involve irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. The position may be required to perform duties outside its usual classification during a declared emergency.

Requirements

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, players, and coworkers.
Ability to prepare adequate and accurate reports about disputes over decisions during games.
Ability to make prompt and equitable decisions while officiating assigned games.
Ability to apply common-sense understanding to work processes, procedures, programs, and services.
Ability to speak clearly, understand spoken information, and listen effectively.
Ability to remain calm and effective under stressful conditions, work independently, and exercise sound judgment.
Thorough knowledge of the rules, regulations, principles, techniques, and equipment applicable to the assigned sport.
Knowledge of handling interactions with the public.
Ability to perform varied duties accurately and quickly under time-sensitive deadlines and to learn and use new skills and knowledge as information or technology changes.
Effective written and spoken communication skills, including the ability to read in English, compare words and number sequences, and provide and follow verbal and written instructions.
Ability to work as a team member and establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Regularly lift up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift up to 30 pounds.
Good physical condition, including the ability to see details at close range and at a distance.

Nice To Haves

Experience with ice skating and teaching ice-skating lessons is preferred.
A U.S. Figure Skating certificate is preferred but not required.
A high school diploma or GED is preferred.
Experience in professional athletic work, coaching, or ice skating is preferred; equivalent combinations of experience and training may also provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Responsibilities

Teach ice-skating skills to participants of all ages and abilities.
Create a fun, safe, encouraging, respectful, and welcoming learning and activity environment.
Communicate with participants, parents, staff, employees, and the public.
Officiate sporting events, games, activities, or competitions and ensure rules and standards of play are observed.
Inspect equipment, participants, and event sites for compliance with regulations and safety requirements.
Track event times and start or stop play when necessary.
Assess performances, award points, impose penalties, and determine results.
Resolve claims of rule infractions or complaints tactfully and apply necessary penalties.
Use appropriate signals and mechanics, and provide guidance to personnel assisting with events.
Assist scorekeepers, ballfield maintenance, police, and servicing personnel as needed.
Communicate problems or concerns to the facilitator or supervisor.
Understand and follow emergency and evacuation procedures.
Promote programs and policies, provide positive public relations, and encourage sportsmanship.
Prepare written reports about disputes that are not resolved to the satisfaction of all parties.
Respond to citizens’ questions and concerns courteously and promptly.
Perform other directly related duties assigned by management and, during a declared emergency, temporarily perform duties outside the normal classification.
