About The Position

The Sports Editor is responsible for the Sports content of The Xavierite. This role involves assigning sports stories to reporters and columnists, maintaining contact with contributors, and ensuring approximately three pages of content per issue. This student employment opportunity supports the development of skills aligned with the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) Career Readiness Competencies, including Professionalism, Teamwork, Technology, and Communication. The Sports Editor is a leading member of the Sports Committee and must ensure the content primarily covers SXU Athletics, featuring a variety of news and commentary stories. The position requires producing two articles per week and adhering to news writing guidelines for accuracy, fairness, and minimal bias. The role also includes attending weekly section and general staff meetings, maintaining weekly office hours, and attending a news writing workshop.

Requirements

  • MUST BE A STUDENT AT SAINT XAVIER UNIVERSITY
  • Must be Federal Work Study E ligible
  • Must Include a Resume and Cover Letter

  • Preference in journalism, communication, or English.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the Sports section layout of The Xavierite newspaper
  • Is a leading member of the Sports Committee
  • Ensure that the Sports Section is three pages of content per issue
  • Attends weekly section meetings with the Editor-in-Chief and The Deputy Editor-in-Chief
  • Attends general staff meeting
  • Meets weekly with his/her section writers
  • Maintain weekly-posted office hours in The Xavierite office (6 hours per week)
  • Ensures that majority of the content covered pertains to SXU Athletics
  • Ensures that the Sports Section has a variety of Sports News Stories and Sports Commentary stories
  • Produces two articles per week
  • Ensures that all Sports News Stories follow the same guidelines as a News Story would. (All articles are written accurately, fairly, and with as little bias as possible)
  • Attends news writing workshop held by Director of Student Media
