About The Position

The JCC Ranch Camp is seeking enthusiastic individuals to join their team as Sports and Aquatics Leads for the summer season. This role involves creating and leading engaging sports and aquatics programs for campers of all ages, ensuring a safe, fun, and memorable experience. Staff members are expected to be active participants in camp life, contributing to a positive community atmosphere. The position requires a high level of energy, creativity, and adaptability, with opportunities for leadership and program development.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age or 17 and graduated from high school.
  • One year of experience in a child care setting or a vested interest in working in a professional child care setting.
  • One year of experience teaching or leading sports activities in a child care or school setting.
  • Satisfactorily fulfill requirements for employment at the Staenberg-Loup JCC, including background screening, three references, documentation, and compliance with CDHS law.
  • Ability to obtain or pass Lifeguard certification course provided prior to the start of camp.
  • Must be high-energy, enthusiastic, creative, and open-minded.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous camp experience.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Current Lifeguard Certificate (training provided as needed).
  • Completed some college coursework or hold high school diploma (GED) or equivalent experience.

Responsibilities

  • Create and run multiple daily programs for campers of all ages in specialty areas (court sports, field sports, and pool) that are safe, fun, and memorable.
  • Document programming for future use by other staff members.
  • Work with the program team to create and run engaging staff and all-camp programming.
  • Facilitate and support all aspects of the sports and aquatics programs, including organization of materials, creating sports tournaments, teaching sportsmanship, and running pool games.
  • As a lifeguard, ensure the safety of campers and staff at the pool through safety briefings and policy enforcement.
  • Assist with cleanup and management of the pool and surrounding area, and manage pool chemical logs.
  • Specialize in one branch of traditional programming (Court Sports, Field Sports, or Aquatics) and hold additional responsibility for its quality, facilitation, and upkeep.
  • If experienced, step into additional leadership roles such as developing programming for staff events (Onegs, staff appreciation) and all-camp events (evening programs, special days).
  • Work with the SIT (Staff in Training) program as a mentor.
  • Attend staff orientations and be available to live at camp for the summer season (minimum 5-6 weeks required).
  • Complete a 7-hour online portion of lifeguard training prior to the practical course, if required.
  • Prioritize campers' physical, social, and emotional health, safety, and well-being.
  • Work as a team with co-staff to ensure smooth daily operations and schedule adherence.
  • Complete daily camper notes to track physical and emotional health, cabin social dynamics, and overall camper well-being.
  • Create an inclusive community for campers.
  • Participate in all camp activities.
  • Know the location and activities of campers at all times.
  • Manage camper behaviors using positive behavior management techniques, safety policies, emergency procedures, and camp rules.
  • Be flexible and adaptable to changing camp situations.
  • Live in a bunk with co-staff and campers.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
