About The Position

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Student Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) invites applications for a Sport Psychological Assistant/Sport Staff Psychologist position. This role is embedded within UNLV Athletics, offering a unique opportunity to provide comprehensive mental health services to student-athletes through a partnership between CAPS and Athletics. CAPS is an IACS-Accredited center within the Student Wellness unit. UNLV Athletics supports over 400 student-athletes across 16 NCAA Division I varsity sports. This is a full-time, 12-month position. The Sport Psychologist is a member of both CAPS and Athletics, co-supervised by leadership from both departments. The primary responsibility is to deliver accessible, culturally responsive, and evidence-based mental health services to student-athletes, supporting their emotional well-being, academic success, personal development, and overall functioning. Services include individual, couples, and group therapy; crisis assessment and intervention; psychological assessment; consultation; and outreach programming. The Sport Psychologist will also consult with coaches, athletic trainers, sports medicine staff, and Athletics administrators to promote wellness and help-seeking behaviors among student-athletes. Additional duties include psychoeducational programming, performance-related interventions (resilience, stress management, adjustment, leadership), and collaborative care coordination with various athletic and mental health professionals. Responsibilities may also include needs assessments, program evaluation, committee participation, supervision of trainees, and contributing to integrated mental health services. CAPS offers an APA-accredited Doctoral Psychology Internship Program and a practicum training program.

Requirements

Doctoral degree in Counseling or Clinical Psychology from an accredited college or university.
One year of related professional experience.
Demonstrated experience and training in generalist counseling.
Experience providing mental health services to collegiate student-athletes, athletes, or other high-performing populations.
For Sport Staff Psychologist: Licensure for independent practice as a Psychologist is required, and Nevada licensure for independent practice as a Psychologist is required prior to the start of employment.
Successful candidates will have strong clinical assessment and crisis intervention skills, including experience working with complex presenting concerns in a high-performance or collegiate setting.
Experience providing brief therapy, group counseling, and consultation is required.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.
All candidates must pass a background screening.
Employees must be in compliance with the Student Wellness Center Employee Exposure to Communicable Disease (Prevention of) Policy.

Nice To Haves

Training or experience in sport psychology, performance enhancement, and consultation within athletic settings is preferred.
Certification as a Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) through the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP) is preferred but not required.
For Sport Psychological Assistant: Candidates must obtain a provisional license as a Nevada Psychological Assistant by the start date. Candidates are required to attain licensure as a Psychologist in Nevada within 18 months from the date of hire for postdoctoral candidates and 24 months from the date of hire for new doctoral graduates.
Experience in supervision and training is preferred, as this position may involve supervision of trainees depending on licensure status.
A desire to work in a highly collaborative, multidisciplinary environment is essential.
Experience providing sport-related mental health consultation, performance-informed interventions, or outreach within athletic settings is preferred.
Candidates from an APA-accredited graduate program and candidates from an APA-accredited internship program are preferred.

Responsibilities

Provide accessible, culturally responsive, and evidence-based mental health services to student-athletes.
Deliver individual, couples, and group therapy.
Conduct crisis assessment and intervention.
Perform psychological assessment.
Provide consultation services.
Develop and implement outreach programming.
Offer mental health consultation to coaches, athletic trainers, sports medicine staff, and Athletics administrators.
Promote a culture of wellness and help-seeking among student-athletes.
Provide psychoeducational programming and performance-related interventions.
Work collaboratively with coaches, athletic trainers, sports medicine staff, athletic administrators, CAPS clinicians, psychiatrists, and care management professionals.
Conduct needs assessments.
Evaluate programs and services.
Participate on CAPS and Athletics committees.
Supervise doctoral interns and graduate trainees (as appropriate for licensure level).
Contribute to the continued development of integrated mental health services within Athletics and CAPS.
