About The Position

L3Harris is seeking a Specialist-level Mechanical Design Engineer to design components and systems for solid propulsion systems used on solid rocket motors and/or controllable solid systems. The role works with minimal direction and exercises latitude in determining objectives and approaches. The engineer may lead design work for components and systems such as hot gas thrusters, insulation systems, manifolds, ignition systems, pressure vessels, and test hardware used in controllable solid propulsion or other advanced propulsion systems. The position involves developing design concepts and 3D models, supporting detailed manufacturing drawings, conducting trade studies, and preparing component specifications and procedures. The engineer works with analysis, manufacturing, project engineering, quality, customer support, suppliers, and other members of an Integrated Product Team. The role also supports production and hardware processing, configuration changes, testing, risk reduction, customer presentations, and engineering reports. The position is located in Huntsville, Alabama, with a 9/80 schedule: employees work 9 out of every 14 days, totaling 80 hours, and have every other Friday off. Travel is approximately 25% and includes local travel, offsite locations, and suppliers. The candidate must be able to obtain a U.S. secret security clearance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least 4 years of prior mechanical design experience; or a graduate degree and at least 2 years of prior mechanical design experience; or, in lieu of a degree, at least 8 years of prior mechanical design experience.
  • Ability to obtain a U.S. secret security clearance.
  • Working knowledge of the application of engineering concepts, practices, and techniques.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with CREO CAD software and Windchill PLM systems.
  • Familiarity with ASME Y14.5.
  • Experience with solid rocket motors.
  • Knowledge of solid propulsion systems design and manufacturing methods.

Responsibilities

  • Develop design concepts and 3D models and support detailed drawings for manufacturing parts.
  • Perform mechanical design activities for composite cases, solid propulsion systems, and related components.
  • Lead component and system design, potentially including hot gas thrusters, insulation systems, manifolds, ignition systems, pressure vessels, and test hardware.
  • Conduct trade studies and develop component specifications and procedures as needed.
  • Coordinate with component analysis, manufacturing, project engineering, quality, and customer support groups.
  • Plan and execute complex design tasks with general oversight, work within an Integrated Product Team, and review work products.
  • Participate in shop-floor and production hardware processing at suppliers and internally.
  • Provide input on nonconforming hardware and process planning, support production meetings, and work with supply chain to ensure design requirements are met.
  • Support engineering drawing and specification updates at configuration change boards.
  • Develop or assist with developing test plans and technical reviews.
  • Assist in identifying and supporting risk-reduction and environmental test requirements, including manufacturing pathfinders, subscale testing, and component- and system-level qualification tests.
  • Prepare materials and support presentations for internal and external customers.
  • Prepare engineering reports for tolerance studies, engineering analyses, and failure investigations, including technical close-out reports.
