About The Position

The Small Airborne Effectors Division within Leidos’ Kinetic Effects Business Area is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer for its Huntsville, Alabama campus. The engineer will support design and integration programs involving missile systems and unmanned aircraft, working on multidisciplinary projects in the airborne systems arena. The role fosters advanced technology programs from research and development through full productization.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree and 8–12 years of prior relevant experience, or a Master’s degree and 6–10 years of prior relevant experience.
• Experience with CAD, particularly SOLIDWORKS, fabrication drawings, and basic modeling techniques.
• In-depth experience in mechanical design principles, theories, and application.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to collaborate constructively within a multidisciplinary team.
• Willingness to learn new skills and/or refine existing skills.
• Knowledge of and ability to use common hand tools.
• Availability to travel to support testing and other events, initially around 10% on average.
• Ability to perform physical work, including lifting up to 30 pounds.
• Active SECRET security clearance or higher.

Nice To Haves

• Prior experience with design, development, and testing of flight hardware such as missiles and UAVs.

Responsibilities

• Design and integrate mechanical aspects of airborne systems, including missiles and unmanned aircraft.
• Work independently as part of a broader multidisciplinary engineering team.
• Collaborate with project teams to formulate innovative solutions to complex problems and products across a broad range of applications.
• Coordinate with the purchasing department and outside machine shops to procure hardware.
• Test and assemble hardware in a lab environment.
• Work with manufacturing teams to facilitate the transition from prototype hardware to a deliverable product.
