About The Position

This position oversees the development and installation of driver training programs, safety procedures and policies to reduce accidents, prevent loss, and establish safe working conditions with the goal of reducing work-related accidents and injuries. The Specialist provides administrative support for DOT compliance and is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the driver mentoring program for the Regional Company facilities. Responsible for adherence to company policies including safety and the use of personal protective equipment. Trains and coaches new and existing drivers on the use of applicable tools, equipment, and in fundamental routing practices, transferring expertise to the drivers. Delivers the Smith Training program for new and existing employees who operate a company vehicle. Educates and develops a driving culture that encourages Good Catch and Unsafe Delivery Site Submittals, Incident Reporting, and ensures appropriate response to reports. Administers road tests and truck inspections for commercial drivers. Reviews a driver’s road test to ensure the driver meets company and regulatory requirements. Performs HM 126F and Security training for drivers and branch personnel. Assists in conducting audits of drivers, vehicles, and maintenance facilities. Ensures all applicable DOT training is performed at all locations. Follows up on observations with constructive coaching and retraining when deficiencies are observed. Conducts pre-employment interviewing, driver demonstrations, and evaluations. Ensures locations maintain the proper vehicle maintenance, driver vehicle inspections, and log files. Responsible for the development, training, implementation, and ongoing support of the driver mentor program. Emphasizes and reinforces the Company’s Zero Incident culture to all employees. Communicates the directives of Airgas’ EHS policies and procedures with the goal of reduced accidents, injuries, and property loss. Performs annual driver demonstrations with all drivers who operate a company vehicle, and prepares reports of findings with recommendations for corrective action. Trains personnel who operate a forklift in proper operation, inspection, and maintenance of forklifts. Leads, coordinates, and reviews the Driver Mentor Program to ensure the appropriate onboarding of all drivers. Assists in internal DOT and SMS compliance audits, and prepares reports of findings with recommendations for corrective action. Assists in management accident and injury investigations and participates in incident reviews as part of the incident review committee. Leads and promotes safety, attends safety meetings, and strictly observes safety rules. Devises and creates training programs or procedures which will increase proficiency in safe practices and promote safety consciousness throughout the Company. Assists the Safety Director with various office and administrative duties, such as providing driver-related safety training for monthly safety meetings and maintenance of safety records. All employees are expected to perform any reasonable work request that falls within the qualifications but is not specifically described.

Requirements

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and appropriate level of auto insurance coverage.
  • Must have reliable transportation and be able to work flexible hours at multiple facilities to meet management expectations.
  • Must be comfortable with public speaking and presenting information in front a group.
  • Possess strong interpersonal and oral communication skills to communicate effectively with a diverse group of associates, management, medical and insurance personnel, regulatory agencies, and/or members of the general public.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
  • Must possess knowledge and understanding of DOT, OSHA, & DHS, rules and regulations and training requirements.
  • Must be able to wear required PPE.
  • Proven ability to work independently and under tight deadlines in a detail-oriented environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in industrial or occupational safety preferred, or a similar discipline that would be considered relevant to this position.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) designation is preferred.
  • SAP or similar software system experience.
  • Intermediate skills operating a computer in Windows based environment is recommended.
  • Minimum 3-5 years’ experience in safety related capacity, previous safety experience in related industries.
