About The Position

Pomona College, established in 1887, is the founding college of the Claremont Colleges, a consortium of five undergraduate institutions and two graduate institutions in Claremont, CA. The Pomona-Pitzer Athletic teams comprise students from both Pomona and Pitzer Colleges and compete in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) and the NCAA Division III. This position reports to the Head Football Coach and Director of Athletics and is responsible for assisting in all aspects of program operations, including organizing and implementing practice plans, providing instruction, and developing strategies for competition. The role also involves evaluating and recruiting prospective student-athletes, scouting opponents, supporting sports camps and clinics, maintaining communication with players, overseeing team equipment, and assisting with the program’s social media presence. The Assistant Coach must be compliant with college, SCIAC, and NCAA DIII rules and procedures, and is particularly sought for experience working with students from diverse backgrounds.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • A valid driver’s license or an equivalent means of reliable transportation.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience as a coach at the collegiate or professional level of athletics.
  • Capacity to positively interact with and support a culturally, ethnically, economically, and socially diverse population of students, faculty, and staff.
  • Strong administrative, interpersonal skills, and computer/technology skills.
  • Appropriate certifications in First Aid, CPR, AED, or willingness to complete certifications upon hire if working independently with student-athletes.
  • Operate computers with basic Microsoft Office software (such as Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint) and associated professional software (such as Internet research and menu-driven databases).
  • Demonstrate understanding of the use of equipment in assessing and improving department systems and processes to achieve annual goals and maintain confidentiality.
  • Demonstrate effective, accurate, and clear communication with excellent/strong verbal, written, interpersonal, reading, phone, and customer service skills.
  • Follow all written and verbal instructions, asking questions as needed for clarification of duties.
  • Use strong organizational and time management skills to complete work with accuracy and keen attention to detail.
  • Must be available for extensive weekend and evening hours during the season.
  • Must be willing to work a flexible schedule.
  • All staff positions are ineligible for visa or permanent resident card sponsorship.
  • As a California employer, Pomona College requires all employees to be residents of California.

Nice To Haves

  • Collegiate playing and/or coaching experience preferred.
  • Experience in the recruitment of academically focused scholar-athletes is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in all aspects of program operations.
  • Organize and implement practice plans.
  • Provide instruction to student-athletes.
  • Develop strategies and tactical plans for competition days.
  • Evaluate and recruit prospective student-athletes.
  • Scout opponents and prepare detailed reports.
  • Support the execution of sports camps and clinics.
  • Maintain effective communication with players.
  • Oversee team equipment.
  • Assist with the management of the program’s social media presence.
  • Ensure compliance with college, SCIAC, and NCAA DIII rules and procedures.
  • Support the development and performance of the program’s special teams units.
  • Coach kickers, long snappers, and other relevant specialists.
  • Attend Thursday practices and Saturday game days.
  • Evaluate practice and game film footage.
  • Provide position-specific instruction and feedback.
  • Assist with special teams’ preparation and strategy.
  • Serve as an asset in identifying and recruiting prospective student-athletes.
  • Serve as home contest manager, working alongside the Assistant Director for Operations and Events.
  • Assist with club sports.
  • Assist with oversight of the Athletic Performance Center.
  • Assist with the Center for Athletics, Recreation, and Wellness.
  • Serve on department committees.
