About The Position

The Special / HMEO Sign Maker performs public sign design, layout, fabrication, installation, and repair, along with related maintenance and manual labor for the DPW Department. The position uses computer software and hands-on methods to prepare signs, operates sign-making and other equipment, and transports and installs signage. It may also perform Motor Equipment Operator (MEO) duties as required.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED.
Three years of experience in public sign installation and repair, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Ability to perform labor-intensive work in difficult environmental conditions, including frequent lifting, pulling, and pushing of 70 pounds.
Commonwealth of Massachusetts Commercial Driver’s License.

Responsibilities

Paint street lines and crosswalks and clean and maintain buildings and grounds.
Design, lay out, fabricate, and install signs using computers and hand methods.
Use a computer and related software to prepare sign layouts.
Operate cutting and stenciling machinery to prepare lettering, symbols, and shields for highway regulatory and informational signs.
Prepare sign surfaces, smooth new sign blanks, and use a press roll to apply lettering.
Operate hand-held equipment and machinery used for sign installation, including power saws, sanders, sockets, compressors, jackhammers, pole saws, chainsaws, and ratchets.
Operate lighting equipment used in the transportation and placement of signage.
Transport finished signs to installation locations using a pickup truck; ensure safe and proper operation of tools, vehicles, and equipment and follow safety standards and regulatory requirements.
Erect and repair road signs and make and repair barricades.
Operate a highway-striping machine and mix paint for it.
Clean and maintain tools, machinery, and equipment.
Assist with inventory of purchased signs and participate in ordering materials and supplies.
Coordinate activities with other departments and work groups as needed.
Perform MEO duties and other related duties as directed.
