About The Position

Working in accordance with a detailed plan to support academic events, social events, cultural events and general campus moves, the incumbent performs general and specific cleaning, deliveries, set ups and breakdowns of equipment, such as tables, chairs, podiums, stages, coat racks, and other equipment requested for events and non-events; moving, assembling/disassembling, and transporting all types of furniture across Georgetown University premises in the DC area. In emergency or unusual situations, the incumbent performs other tasks as assigned including but not limited to custodial responsibilities of floor care, classroom cleaning, restroom cleaning, snow and ice removal and clean up associated with water or fire damages. This position supports university events, daily operational needs, and facilities projects by providing manual labor, safe equipment/furniture handling, and customer-service–oriented support.

Requirements

  • HS diploma or GED.
  • One year of janitorial, Special Events setup, or general laborer work experience.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license issued from the District of Columbia, Maryland or Virginia.
  • Must possess (or be able to acquire within a period of 60 days after being hired) a medical card and/or certificate issued by the Department of Transportation (DOT), which is issued by a licensed “medical examiner,” after completion of a DOT physical examination as defined in GU Policy 1017 and DOT Regulations 391.11 (4) – Medical Card/Certificate and 390.5 (1) – Commercial Motor Vehicles (10K+) Definitions.
  • Will be required to complete a training program in special events and building cleaning.
  • Must be able to read and understand product label instructions and to read and understand University policies and procedures.
  • Must be able to work well as part of a team and independently.
  • Must be capable of relating custodial and maintenance problems clearly to the supervisor and/or the Work Management Center.
  • Ability to lift and carry 50-75 lbs regularly.
  • Basic knowledge of hand tools and power tools used for furniture assembly (Drill, Screwdriver, wrench, etc.).
  • Time management and ability to prioritize tasks in fast-paced environments.
  • Experience using tools for assembly/disassembly.
  • Work indoor and outdoor in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, and early morning depending on events schedules or general work requests.
  • Overtime may be required depending on event schedules and general work requests.

Responsibilities

  • Install temporary flooring, such as protective carpet tiles on gym floors.
  • Move, load, and unload furniture, boxes, and equipment between departments, offices, and storage areas.
  • Disassemble and reassemble furniture as required utilizing a wide variety of tools and power tools.
  • Safely operate moving equipment (Carts, dollies, hand trucks, pallet jacks).
  • Maintain storage spaces and inventory rooms organized.
  • Report missing, broken, or unsafe equipment promptly.
  • Perform routine lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling tasks.
  • Follow all safety protocols and equipment guidelines.
  • Ensure compliance with department, union, and university policies.
  • Respond to requests from the Management team, including but not limited to the Director of Custodial and Grounds, Assistant Director of Campus Operations, Assistant Director of Custodial services, Assistant Director of Night Operations, Custodial Supervisors, Landscaping and Grounds Manager, Solid Waste and Recycling Disposal Supervisor, especially in emergency situations like snow removal, spills, and flooding.
  • Use and dispose of materials in accordance with applicable environmental safety and control regulations.
  • Keep abreast of changes and new developments in applicable codes and regulations.
  • Dress in proper uniform and carry valid University identification at all times.
  • Work cooperatively with fellow employees to assure work is completed on time and according to specified plans.
  • Carry a University issued work phone pager or radio while on duty and respond when contacted.
