About The Position

NFI Massachusetts, Inc. is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Special Education Teacher – High School SEL/Transition Specialist to provide individualized educational and transition-focused services to students within a Department of Mental Health funded Intensive Residential Treatment Program (IRTP). This position supports students with complex emotional, behavioral, and mental health needs within a structured therapeutic environment while ensuring compliance with DESE and IDEA regulations. The ideal candidate will possess strong knowledge of social-emotional learning, executive functioning, transition planning, and therapeutic educational practices while supporting students in developing emotional regulation, self-advocacy, vocational readiness, and independent living skills.

Requirements

  • Massachusetts DESE Special Education Teacher License – Moderate Disabilities (5–12) required
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills
  • Commitment to trauma-informed and therapeutic educational practices

Nice To Haves

  • Massachusetts DESE Licensure in an applicable secondary content area preferred
  • Experience supporting transition planning, social-emotional learning, or executive functioning development preferred
  • Experience working with students with emotional, behavioral, or mental health challenges preferred

Responsibilities

  • Provide individualized and small group SEL and transition-focused instruction aligned with student IEP goals and transition plans
  • Develop, implement, and monitor IEP goals, accommodations, and modifications
  • Support the development of executive functioning, emotional regulation, coping, and independent living skills
  • Utilize trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and evidence-based instructional practices
  • Integrate social-emotional learning and executive functioning supports into instruction
  • Maintain a safe, structured, and supportive classroom environment
  • Support students during periods of emotional and behavioral dysregulation using therapeutic and crisis-management strategies
  • Participate in crisis prevention and intervention training and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to support student stabilization
  • Participate in IEP meetings, treatment planning, and multidisciplinary team meetings
  • Maintain accurate student records, progress reports, and required DESE documentation
  • Collaborate with families, school districts, clinical providers, residential staff, and outside agencies to support successful transitions
