Special Education Support Professional - 0.875 FTE at Garfield Elementary
About The Position
Garfield Elementary is seeking a Special Education Support Professional to help students learn, develop, and succeed. The school is a Leader in Me school focused on nurturing the whole child through strong relationships, goal-setting, and the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Kids. This position supports students in special education and regular classrooms, in school settings and on community outings. It is 0.875 FTE, 35 hours per week, for 9 months, with a Monday-through-Friday schedule of 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and a 30-minute unpaid lunch. Starting pay is $18.42 per hour, and a $1,000 sign-on bonus is available.
Requirements
- Two years of post-high-school education or higher, or the ability to pass a standardized test approved by the State of South Dakota for designated Education Assistant positions.
- At least one year of work experience in a position requiring interpersonal interaction skills and knowledge of strategies to support students with social, emotional, and behavioral needs.
- Experience with behavior management.
- Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally.
- Physical ability to perform the listed coordination, hearing, movement, and handling activities, including frequent bending, crouching, reaching, standing, stooping, speaking, and walking.
Responsibilities
- Escort students to transportation and other areas of the building.
- Provide personal care as needed to students with special daily living needs, including toileting, feeding, and physical management.
- Review and practice teacher-taught skills with students one-to-one and in small groups in special education and/or regular classrooms.
- Work with students at school and on community outings.
- Prepare instructional materials as directed or selected by the teacher.
- Reinforce instructional and behavioral objectives.
- Provide clerical assistance with student records, including charting, assignments, attendance, and data for progress notes.
- Assist with student supervision during recess, lunch, and on the playground.
- Maintain the confidentiality of students and their families.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
