About The Position

Zurich Canada is seeking a bilingual Senior Underwriter / Automobile Underwriter for its Montreal office. The successful candidate will be responsible for analyzing and underwriting new business and renewals, interacting with the market, and providing exceptional customer service. Reporting to the VP, Casualty Manager, Eastern Region, you will manage a portfolio of commercial auto risks of medium to high complexity, with the opportunity to further develop your auto portfolio. You will leverage your extensive broker network and deep expertise in underwriting auto products, both regionally and nationally, to grow your business portfolio. You will use The Zurich Way of Underwriting to analyze and underwrite new business and renewals with limited supervision, within your delegated authority on highly complex files, while maintaining a high level of customer service. Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent and at least 3 years of experience in underwriting or market development.
  • OR High school diploma or equivalent and at least 6 years of experience in claims or underwriting support.
  • OR Zurich Certified Insurance Apprenticeship Program, including a college diploma, and at least 1 year of experience in underwriting or market development.
  • OR Zurich Certified Insurance Apprenticeship Program, including a college diploma, and at least 4 years of experience in claims or underwriting support.
  • Knowledge of the line(s) of business and legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Knowledge of pricing timelines for new business and renewals.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office.
  • Bilingualism in French and English.
  • Spoken and written English proficiency is required to facilitate communication with internal and external stakeholders outside of Quebec.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • At least 5 years of experience in commercial lines auto insurance underwriting.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience with: Medium to large fleet risks, rated in block; Loss-rated accounts; Strong commercial exposure to the US and/or US-registered vehicles.

Responsibilities

  • Proactively seek renewal and new business opportunities from key partner brokers.
  • Conduct detailed analysis of opportunities with key distributors to identify growth potential.
  • Qualify accounts to fit the organization's appetite, considering business potential.
  • Conduct planned and well-prepared visits to agents/brokers/clients, including on-site visits.
  • Negotiate terms and conditions and close deals.
  • Cross-sell other lines of business to increase product density within the account.
  • Participate in sales team meetings related to assigned brokers and/or territory.
  • Proactively participate in the targeted accounts process by managing a qualified list of opportunities 90-120 days prior to the effective date.
  • Update required systems with broker/client visit details and account status within prescribed timelines.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for assigned targeted accounts.
  • Develop strong broker and client networks within the business lines underwritten by the business unit.
  • Calculate target pricing accurately using underwriting tools appropriately.
  • Measure exposure/analyze risk.
  • Contribute to the training and development of staff.
  • Provide expertise on coverage issues related to claims guidelines and programs.
  • Travel for business needs and work extended hours during peak periods, as needed.
  • Maintain a valid driver's license.
