Solutions Engineer

Render
$230,000 - $300,000Remote

About The Position

Render is seeking a Solutions Engineer to lead the technical aspects of its pre-sales efforts. This is a key role on the go-to-market team, especially as Heroku transitions to maintenance-focused support, creating an opportunity to attract developers and engineering teams looking for a modern platform. The Solutions Engineer will be the technical driver for winning new business, acting as a credible, hands-on engineer for prospects making infrastructure decisions. The role involves collaborating with Account Executives throughout the sales cycle, including leading discovery, architecting solutions, conducting proof-of-concepts, and guiding migrations. The ideal candidate will be comfortable engaging with senior engineers on complex migrations and presenting platform overviews to VPs of Engineering. This position reports to the Head of Technical Sales.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of experience in a pre-sales, solutions engineering, or technical sales role within a cloud infrastructure, PaaS, or developer tools company.
  • Deep, hands-on familiarity with at least one major PaaS platform (Heroku, Render, Railway, Fly.io, or similar), including deploying real applications.
  • Proficiency across the modern web application stack: web servers, background workers, databases (especially Postgres), caching layers, CI/CD pipelines, and container-based deployments.
  • Ability to write code (Python, Ruby, Node.js, Go, or similar) sufficient for debugging customer deployments, adapting code samples, or building POC integrations.
  • Understanding of networking fundamentals, including private networking, egress control, TLS, and custom domains.
  • Excellent communication skills, comfortable presenting to VPs of Engineering and collaborating with developers on complex issues.
  • Proven track record of managing multiple simultaneous technical evaluations effectively.
  • Thrives in a fast-moving, early-stage environment and is eager to help shape processes as a foundational team member.

Nice To Haves

  • Direct experience migrating production workloads from Heroku to another platform.
  • Familiarity with Render's product suite, including Blueprints (render.yaml), Preview Environments, private services, and managed Postgres.
  • Experience with AI/ML workloads such as LLM inference endpoints, GPU compute, vector databases, or model serving.
  • Background in technical content creation (migration guides, architecture blog posts, YouTube tutorials, conference talks).
  • Exposure to Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools like Terraform or Pulumi and their interaction with PaaS abstractions.
  • Experience in a quota-carrying or quota-influenced pre-sales role at a high-velocity startup.

Responsibilities

  • Lead technical discovery with prospects, identifying infrastructure requirements, architectural constraints, scale targets, and migration complexity to define a clear path to Render.
  • Deliver customized product demonstrations highlighting Render's capabilities, such as persistent compute, autoscaling, Postgres, background workers, cron jobs, preview environments, and Blueprints, in relation to prospect use cases.
  • Architect and execute proof-of-concept deployments to validate Render's ability to handle real production workloads, including AI-powered applications, multi-service stacks, and async pipelines.
  • Serve as the primary technical resource for prospects migrating from Heroku, addressing challenges related to complex multi-dyno architectures, large Postgres databases, and third-party add-on dependencies.
  • Develop and maintain migration playbooks, demo environments, and POC templates to accelerate prospect time-to-value and enhance team efficiency.
  • Address technical objections and competitive comparisons (e.g., against AWS, GCP, Railway, Fly.io) with well-reasoned arguments to build trust.
  • Respond accurately and promptly to technical sections of RFPs and security questionnaires.
  • Collaborate with Account Executives to build consensus among various stakeholders, including engineering, DevOps, and infrastructure decision-makers.
  • Synthesize field feedback into structured product input for Engineering and Product teams to help prioritize the roadmap based on deal outcomes.
  • Contribute to technical marketing content, such as migration guides, blog posts, and webinars, to enhance Render's credibility with developer audiences.
