About The Position

The Software Systems Engineer will provide Systems Engineering Triage support to Launch Control System (LCS) development and operations. The role supports the software, hardware, and networking systems used to launch NASA’s next-generation rocket, including system analysis, troubleshooting, testing, and anomaly documentation. The engineer will work with in-house and commercial software and identify application and hardware dependencies and characteristics across all levels of the OSI model. Clear written and verbal communication is required, including occasional verbal status updates to management.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college or university and four years of progressive, relevant experience, or six years of directly related IT experience. Additional education may be substituted for experience.
• Knowledge of software development and systems engineering.
• Experience troubleshooting client/server architectures and integrating, debugging, and troubleshooting software releases.
• Ability to interpret written information and communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
• Must be able to travel to support position requirements, potentially including airline travel.
• Must comply with applicable drug-free workplace requirements, including drug testing for illegal drug use for employees in sensitive positions.
• Must be dependable and punctual.
• Must be able to work safely and evacuate buildings quickly during an emergency at a hazardous testing facility.
• Must maintain a positive work atmosphere through appropriate conduct and communication.

Nice To Haves

• A four-year degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field is preferred.
• System administration experience in a UNIX environment.
• Experience with C++, Java, Perl, Python, expect, shell scripting, or XML.
• Knowledge of network or enterprise monitoring and management tools such as HP Operations Manager, NNM, SNMP, or Wireshark.

Responsibilities

• Troubleshoot software and hardware on Firing Room development and operational sets.
• Provide short-term basic guidance to users.
• Collect data from the user environment.
• Analyze collected data related to anomalies.
• Document anomalies.
• Communicate system status and issues to users, managers, and technical staff.
• Analyze, understand, and work with in-house developed and commercial software packages.
• Identify dependencies and characteristics of software applications and hardware at all levels of the OSI model.
• Provide verbal status updates to management on occasion.
