About The Position

Syms Strategic Group (SSG) is hiring a full-time Software Systems Engineer Principal to serve as the Edifecs Platform Manager for a Veterans Affairs (VA) opportunity. The role leads the Edifecs application support organization and is responsible for operational stability, scalability, compliance, and strategic alignment. It provides technical oversight, manages staffing, drives roadmap execution, and partners with product, architecture, vendor, and business teams. The position is 100% U.S.-based remote, but candidates located in California, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, or Washington will not be considered. U.S. citizenship is required, and the candidate must possess or qualify for a Public Trust (MBI). This is a W-2 position. The position guides architecture decisions, modernization, cloud scalability, and performance strategies. It configures and maintains Edifecs XEServer, XEngine, Trusted Platform Modules (TPMs), SpecBuilder, and related modules; guides EDI Analysts on processing rules, routing logic, and batch workflows; and diagnoses mapping issues, validation failures, functional errors, and performance bottlenecks. It also supports logging, JVM tuning, certificate and keystore configuration, release deployments, environment refreshes, patching, and upgrades. The engineer collaborates with EDI Analysts, DevSecOps Engineers, cloud teams, and business teams to operate and improve production systems. The role requires substantial EDI, healthcare, or enterprise application operations, software or data engineering experience, strong AWS experience, and hands-on knowledge of the Edifecs platform. A master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline is listed as formal education. The stated salary range is $109,623–$126,790.

Requirements

At least 10 years of experience in EDI, healthcare, or enterprise application operations, software or data engineering, with strong AWS experience.
Strong knowledge of Edifecs architecture and transaction lifecycles.
Strong experience in AWS cloud environments.
Hands-on understanding of Edifecs XEServer, including orchestrations, batch flows, and execution contexts.
Hands-on understanding of XEngine, including validation, rulesets, and canonical structures.
Hands-on understanding of TPM, including trading partner configuration, routes, and agreements.
Hands-on understanding of EDI Gateway visibility, audit, search, and reprocessing.
Hands-on understanding of SpecBuilder, including Implementation Guide definitions and map development.
Experience managing technical aspects of inbound and outbound EDI connectivity using AS2, SFTP, FTPS, and HTTPS channels.
Experience with API-based integrations and gateway services.
Experience troubleshooting EDI and conducting root-cause analysis of transaction failures, mapping or misalignment defects, partner-specific rejection patterns, batch job-flow failures, and throughput or performance degradation.
Experience with job-throughput optimization, engine and JVM performance tuning, memory management, high availability and failover orchestration, and proactive monitoring dashboards.
Understanding of AWS EC2 instance sizing, OS tuning, storage I/O patterns, file-transfer endpoints, routing, firewall coordination, network-path debugging, and SSL/TLS certificate lifecycle management.
Proficiency with Git and GitHub, including branching strategies, pull requests, and collaborative workflows.
Knowledge of compliance, audit, and partner governance.
Infrastructure-as-code experience with Ansible and Terraform.
Ability to communicate technical architecture decisions and trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders.
Comfort driving ambiguous architecture decisions to resolution with limited direction.
Experience with Agile methodologies, including Scrum and Kanban, and JIRA.
Strong documentation habits, including architecture diagrams, data dictionaries, and migration runbooks.
Ability to collaborate with development, operations, and security teams.
U.S. citizenship is required.
Must possess or qualify for a Public Trust (MBI).
Must meet government security investigation and eligibility requirements for access to classified information and be able to obtain a government-granted security clearance.
Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline is listed under Formal Education.

Nice To Haves

EDIFECS certification.
Deep hands-on experience with X.12 EDI transaction standards and key workflows, including medical claims transactions such as 837, 834, and 277, as well as 270/271 and 278 transactions.
Knowledge of HIPAA compliance requirements in cloud data architecture.
Experience with healthcare payer/PBM systems, clearinghouses, or pharmacy operations.
AWS certification.

Responsibilities

Collaborate with EDI Analysts, DevSecOps Engineers, cloud teams, and business teams.
Troubleshoot EDI transaction failures, mapping defects, partner-specific rejections, batch-flow failures, and throughput or performance degradation.
Optimize job throughput and engine performance; support JVM tuning, memory management, high availability, failover orchestration, and monitoring dashboards.
Gather and translate business reporting requirements into technical data models.
Document architecture diagrams, data dictionaries, and migration runbooks.
Work collaboratively with development, operations, and security teams to ensure seamless production system operations.
